Maybe, just maybe; when you originally formatted the ext drive for whatever device you first used it on, it could only be formatted for that only.

Take for example my sons Xbox. He has a 1tb ext storage device. Once it was formatted for his Xbox it prevented it from being used else where without it be formatting for the new device that he would want to use it on. Doing so would cause him to lose all his saved data if he wanted to use it on another device.

This could be the case here. But what do I know. Im not technically savy.

If you want to go technical, how critical are the photos, the reason I ask is you can go as far as sending to a clean room to disassemble the drive and recover the file ( very costly).

Being in the IT world for 40+ years there are many options, would be happy to give you options depended on your actual needs.

I'll add that if you open the case it will void the warranty. WD is very good about fixing or replacing these drives under warranty, but of course what you want is the files on the drive. you might want to ask WD if they will extract the contents of the drive for you. It will be expensive.

I have never been into this forum, but I see you have a bad hard drive with many photos. I had the same issue several years back. Go and look up hard drive backups, and several companies will show up.. Do not choose one without asking around as some will charge 200.00 just for a look. Find one with recommendations from other photographers.
Good luck.

I have been reading this format for a long time, just never did join but used it for reference many times.
Also when you start up again, go all solid state drives. I am 3 years into four drives and no failures.
Sorry I don't know how to add a title to my note.

If you tried it in another computer and it still didn't work, then you can try removing it from the enclosure and installing in a new enclosure. If that doesn't work then the only option I know of is to send it to a drive recovery service, very expensive. You should have more than one backup, get an extra external drive and also invest in a cloud backup service, cheap insurance.

Apparently that worked in the past but not now.
