My PC will not recognize my drive. It has thousands of photos stored on it. Any suggestions on how to recover my data?

All I can offer is "restart" computer.
I have a guy for when I have problems.

Thanks Pat. I tried that. I believe there is a corrupt file because I may have removed the drive before it was safe to do so.

What error message, if any, do you see? If the controller portion had failed you might try swapping the drive to a different enclosure. Of the driver is the problem, there are utilities that can scan the drive at a very low level and reassemble files but it is a bit complicated.

Hopefully that is not the only place you had them.
If a CPU restart doesn't work (power down the external also).... Drive may be bad?
If the drive is bad, recovery, if it is possible, would be expensive.

Is this an internal drive then? Is it the system drive?

I had a similar problem a while ago. I took the drive and inserted into an external drive docking station (they run around $50.00) I was able to access the drive from my laptop and backup all the data to another drive.

Also, if this is an internal drive, did you back it up to an external or the cloud?

The only thing that pops up is, "Do you want to format?" Obviously I decline the option.

I believe the drive is bad and see dollars flying out the window.

Thank you for your response. It is a portable external drive and I don't use the cloud. I will look into an external drive docking station. Cheers.

Could be the drive is ok, but the case is bad, I have one similar that the computer cannot recognize and it is the case.
I need to replace it.

Interesting. Who replaced the case for you?

Best Buy, now I get to haggle with the Geeks again.
It's been a low priority project that has increased in importance since I have filled another 1TB drive.
