Mexico is a third world country.. I spent three {!} years in El Paso in the fifties with many many trips to Juarez. The storys about Mexican police....not good.. The only reason I went back at the time is the the US MP's got to vacuum the Juarez jail of GI's every morning, and beer was a nickle and girls were $3. Now, I wont go there... You are probably OK if you stay in a tourist town....but not Juarez or Tiauana..

I go and mostly stay at a resort. If I make a trip outside the resort I have the hotel make the arrangements and get them to provide a car and driver. Don't go wandering to isolated places. I take a load of camera gear and computer stuff.

There are always people, who believe it will never happen to me. They will go to areas of the world where insurgencies are active or where drug cartels control everything. I am reminded of the young man hiking near the North Korean border, who was captured and came home while in the process of dying. He thought it would never happen to him. Then there was the young man foolish enough to go riding on his motor cycle in Iraq after US forces invaded. He thought he was safe and ended up being beheaded by Muslim extremists. He thought it would never happen to him. Not all people are born with common sense and no amount of warning and counseling will change their mind. Just be aware that when the you know what hits the fan there ain't nobody coming to save you. You placed yourself in the situation and have to suffer the consequences. Remember how the Mexican authorities treated the young man, who accidentally crossed the border with a shotgun in the trunk of his car. Mexico is not a safe place to go messing around in and I will stay just as far away as I can.

As an exprofessional, insure equipment before you go. Lenses, bodies everything if you choose to use your high end equipment. But I’d get a nice fixed lense or short zoom camera (used) and be a tourist and enjoy yourself without a worry. Check in with the state department about travel risks, wouldn’t hurt.

Their can always be a problem when carrying hi end camera gear even in the US. Just be aware of your surroundings and you should be OK. Happy Shooting.

Without reading the article I can say #1 it was not tourists #2- the Cancun hotel strip is about 10 miles long 2 blocks wide with mammoth hotels on both sides of the street - several thousand people every where you look - not one tourist hurt. I am sure it was cartel related - the Cancun hotel strip is about 10 miles long - in some places

Not trying to be a smart ass but ex professional, what? We, most likely, are all professional or ex professional, something, lawyers, police, military, butcher, baker, candlestick maker, postman and so on. What ex professional are you? I ask because if you are an ex professional baker it doesn't have much to add to the discussion. If you are an ex professional travel agent then your comments are probably worth listening to.

I don't know about other but I am a retired "professional grocery clerk" - 40 yrs of working in the business - retired 23 yrs and still wake up having nightmares of that s$%t. that is why my first 5 yrs of real retirement age 62 - 67 - living on the beach near Cancun was so dang good.

Nice photos. I worked many years in the grocery clerk business before getting into the USMC, law enforcement and corrections. I hope you are still enjoying retirement.

I ran across this photo that was posted on one of my MX forums - this just shows the north 2/3 of the Cancun tourist strip - then ad on the 100's of resorts that dot the beach/coast for the next 100 miles south - there is just no reason to think this area is unsafe to visit if you just use some common sense.
