I am debating whether to take my high end camera gear to Mexico or just take an inexpensive point and shoot camera. I'll be staying at a resort but plan on trips to nearby ruins for photo ops. Some blogs say carrying high end equipment outside of the resort is a risk. I would really appreciate reading about your experiences while sightseeing near Cancun.
I have traveled to Cancun with high end camera equipment and have had no problems, please keep in mind that my last trip there was over two years ago.
Given what I have read lately,I would not carry that same equipment there now.
Tommy, we travel to Mexico annually and have done so for many years. I shoot a lot of photos for a Samaritan cause that the Timeshare Owners a the Inn at Mazatan sponsor. I shoot a Canon 5D III and carry a wide assortment of lens. Never have I felt uncomfortable in carrying or using my gear, nor do we have any tension of theft in the hotel.
We drove from New Mexico to Mazatlan for 20 years, but now at age 86 decided this year that we should be flying as much a concern for the lengthy trip as security. Go enjoy Mexico and just be as prudent as if you were visiting Chicago.
Here is a weblink showing some of the photos and our Samaritan efforts in the beautiful city of Mazatlan.

a "wall" ain't cheap as we will soon find out
I have traveled to Mexico many times, all over Mexico, both with point and shoot and with DSLRS, and have never had any issues. But, just like traveling anywhere, one has to be careful and aware of one's surroundings. I would recommend one body and one lens.

Very cool work you are doing there!!! Thanks for what you are doing and for sharing your photos of the experience!!! I hope that I am in good enough health to do something like that at 86!
Thanks. I've decided to follow your advice and take one body and one lens. Also taking the point and shoot as a backup.

Stick with the cheap one. A friend of mine had his 5D MK4 stolen while they were eating.

What is the cost to the US taxpayer to feed, house, provide clothes, educate and provide medical care for all the illegals in the country??
Do this. Google the penalty that Mexico imposes on illegal immigrants.

We are not here to discuss your political view. Mexico is fine to take your gear as long as you are aware of your surroundings and are not careless with your gear. I have gone over many, many trips. I always take my gear with me, even out to eat. Never had a problem.
Frankly I wouldn't go to Mexico. Even the resorts are dangerous.
