Photography and Video go hand in hand. In the NBP Wineland Smith Rice Award contest Daisy won a video award for 2018 after winning the Grand Prize in photography a couple of years earlier.

If you watch this you see that sometimes a still cannot capture the spectacle and sometimes only a still does.

They are interrelated, but that doesn't mean you have to do both.

My Nikon Df doesn't have video.

I bought the Df because I don't want video feature on my camera but with that said I am sure a lot of people use that feature and greatly appreciate it. I think there are people who bought still cameras only used for video.

How many people really use the video feature of your DSLR and appreciate having it. I have a Canon 5D Mk 4 and never use the video and never will. Let's look at it this way for UHH members.
There is a Video forum here that was started in November of 2012 (over six years ago.) This forum has generated 137 topics and 788 total posts.

Compare that with more recent forums.

Landscape started at the beginning of December 2018 (less than three months ago) has 460 topics and 7893 posts.

Even Pampered Pets started the second week of December has 92 topics and 1276 posts. Fewer topics (but not by much given the time) but a lot more people gushing over cute kittens and puppies. I mean pet pictures are more fascinating to UHHers than video.

So it is not too surprising if not a lot of people on this site use video much.

On some of the earlier models I had I would play with it but never with any serious intent. Weddings are about the only application I would use it for and I use 3 cameras on those with help of course.

I view this as a tool box with various tools that I could use if need be but some tools are used more than others. Nothing more and price was never the issue. I always Tool-Up to be ready for when it gets Real out there. The though of not being prepared would haunt me and so I'd rather error on the side of caution.

I am certain others will have their reasons for addressing this question and I can only speak for myself and sometimes I question that logic as well.

Who wants to limit functionality in your camera, car, computer etc. As I have always been told there is a difference between cheep and inexpensive and trying to get features removed that you don't personally use to lower the price would hurt the industry.

"Cheep" is the sound a baby chicken makes. "Cheap" is the word used to describe someone who wants to dumb something down to enjoy a false economy.

Yep, you are correct - I bet they would have covered that in 5th grade and I just stopped short!

No debate. I use my phone for video.

I use video and love it. It's a challenge to get it right!

Actually, there are plenty people who use their DSLR cameras almost exclusively for video capture!
The DSLR is a popular choice among hobbyist videographers. This may surprise you, but many of the (more polished-looking) videos on Youtube are shot with DSLR cameras. Obviously you won't find all too many videographers on Ugly Hedgehog, as this site is more for still photographers. But go over to sites aimed at video people, and there's usually a heated debate going on about which DSLR camera is best for capturing video.

The camera manufacturers have good reason to include video capability in the DSLR camera, as there is a big demand for this feature. They can't afford not to.

You should try it for special occasions. It really does add another dimension to remembering the event. My son recorded my wedding on my 80D. It is really special to watch and remember.

In addition, it is another opportunity to learn about another new for me aspect of photography. Combining video and stills and music into a movie is a fun and worthwhile challenge.

We use the video feature on our Nikons almost daily. In fact the D7000 lives on its own tripod with lavaliere microphone permanently plugged into it and a old, manual-focus macro lens mounted to it. We use it, and the other 4 Nikons, to produce industry (fly fishing) training videos and pictures. Before the DSLR came along we used high-end (and more expensive) Canon video cameras. The DSLR produces a lot better picture/video than the old Canon cameras did but understand those cameras are now 20 years old so that is not really a fair comparison. Anyway, we'd be lost without our DSLR video capability. Take care & ...

The camera would cost more without the Video. Today they put all the extras on the camera and sell a lot more of the same camera to all the people instead of a lot of different specialty cameras at higher prices.

I’ve used video as an alternative to taking a panorama a few times. Worked well.
