With cameras you have a performance envelope and the larger that envelope is the more circumstances you can actually use the camera although there are times when a 'lesser' camera is more appropriate. E.g a gopro on a mountain bike would be better than a DSLR.
The IQ is certainly not as good but the gopro would usually survive the ride.

There are plenty of situations where an iPhone is not the right camera for the job however where it does work it works well enough to produce a good quality photograph. Outside of its comfort zone it's pretty poor, so are most other cameras.

Most photos are not great from any camera but that's pretty much the fault of the photographer not the camera.
I think the ippa awards do show you can get good photos with an iphone if you know what you are doing.

Even a Mcdonalds meal will taste good if you are hungry enough
The iphone 5 is a rather old iPhone, the oldest Ap... (show quote)

Since Apple specifications for the iPhone are minimal, the only way we find out what's
actually in a new iPhone is after somebody has time to do a "tear down" and publish the
results. So information is always scarce on the latest models.

I totally agree that the iPhone will meets the photography needs of a lot of consumers.
Which has absolutely nothing to do with good photography. Popularity is not a measure
of goodness -- it is a measure of success at marekting a product.

Crayola crayons meet the drawing needs of most consumers. And America's top selling beer
is Bud Light. 'Nuf said?

Not any time soon; however, it does sit in the drawer much more than before getting a good camera with my cell phone. Do take more photos than ever before but really wish I'd have had my DSLR whenever I find myself frustrated because of not being able to coax a shot taken with the cell phone camera into something usable.

Their are a few good apps for taking photos with your cell. The one I use is called "Pro Camera"
It has exposure comp. etc etc. I checked the reviews and bought this one.

I have Nikon digital cameras, D750 and D810. Being an older guy they do get heavy at times. I bought a Sony A6500 and a couple of lenses and love it but still use my Nikons a lot. I don't see the need to switch to the new mirrorless Nikon cameras at this time because I have a lot of lenses and to have to put an adapter on the Z cameras makes no sense. I rarely use my cell for pics but will if I have to. I am content with the equipment I have now and the results I get. If I hit Lotto, maybe that will change!😀

The operating systems and software on smart phones are mostly excellent.
Unfortuanately, photography is primarily optical and is limited by lenses
and sensor size, not by software.

An experienced photographer will produce better photos than any program--
because no one has yet written a computer program that can identify good art
(or what a client or periodical wants). And the computer in your head is a
million times larger than the one in your camera--though not as good at computation.

An experienced photographer needs a handheld calculator more than he needs
AI or complex algorithms.

Spot meters that did calculations (such as Minolta's) were extremely useful.

This was taken 2 years ago on a ski trip. It's useable.

Makes me glad I do not rely on my phone camera! Picture is not very good in my opinion....but I am just an amateur.

Being in business for myself for many years it is not how many you sell but
your margin of profitability. The R&D most be a big number for companies like Sony and Panasonic.
I think that is why Nikon was slow to offer new technology. They took a beating from the
storm that hit the plants. They lost facilities. I like many here a Nikon user for many years.

Sony makes sensors and is constantly showing up with new versions and concept.
the Sony RX10 series I have the III caught me by surprise with its capability.
A bridge camera that can do it all well.

I,m sure you have all read the headlines that camera sales are dropping and phone cameras are booming,it will be nice that the phone owners can snatch that photo that otherwise would have been missed and sure they can blur backgrounds and give portrait like results etc,but my DSLR and more recently my coolpix p7000 won't be being replaced by a phone camera any time soon.
Are you hanging up your DSLR,s members ?

With me a camera(read canon) is like American Express, I never leave home without one.
I do take photos with my cell, too.
A photo is a photo. Quality varies with need.
Much Ado About Nothing?
Check Used camera sales. I wonder how they do. Cameras are getting like cars, new one whether you need it or not.

Could it be that folks are just satisfied with the gear they have?
New bells, fan-dangles, whistles might be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but how many use them or take the time to know how to use them "or" have a use for them?. I have friends that have to have the latest and greatest, but they shoot full auto. They use the camera as it came out of the box, duhhh. But they have the latest for what I have to assume is bragging rights and to look impressive. They do better snaps with their phones than their cameras.
Plus, if you think about it, your always getting up grade offers from your phone service in easy payments and an extended service plan. Do you use all that junk on the phone? I don't, I just want a phone. Do I use a phone camera, yes when crawling under a building or through an attic to document something for a building inspector or ins co. Sure beats taking the chance and hassle of dragging a camera with me.
