Yes. He was our greatest President. He finally picked a General, Ulysses S. Grant, an alcoholic, who could defeat the Confederates. Lincoln knew he was an alcoholic, but still chose him anyway. Abe's son, Robert Todd Lincoln, lived through three Presidential assassinations. His father, James A. Garfield, and William McKinley. Happy Birthday Abe Lincoln.

Grant was not an alcoholic.
Study real history.
I just finished a great book on his Civil War campaigns.
Absolutely brilliant.
Now reading a book on Lee.
Two amazing generals in their own way.
The drunk rumor was the fake news narrative of the era by dumb loser generals and politicians who were jealous of Grant's brilliance in command and tactics.

You can't write about Lincoln with out dealing with the Civil War and issues Lincoln had to deal with that war.

And certainly far more competent than McClellen.

Good article on Grant's drinking. A different perspective, on what I've read about him in other past articles.

You really need to read a book on the South and realize that it was not just we southerners who depended on slavery as a means of economic existence. Businessmen/factory owners above the Mason Dixon line depended as much on the cotton as did the South. The division between the stance taken between the states did not start in 1861 it had been going on since the 1600's. Obsessive export taxes on the produces produced in the South was the straw that broke the uneasy peace.
If the North was so set on freeing the slaves, they sure should have bought them. That process would have been 10x cheaper on the country than the cost of the War and that does not begin to touch the cost of the 100's of thousands of deaths of America's finest youth.
It was truly states right that caused the War. Slavery was only a subset to that fact.
You really need to read a book on the South and re... (show quote)

Slavery was the reason Southern states wanted to leave the Union.

Charles Darwin was also born on this same day in 1809.
