A local Facebook Marketplace ad popped up as I was working up an ad for the Rebel T5i my granddaughter rejected in choosing I keep a T6 for her yearbook staff tool at high school (and more, I hope). It was an ad for a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens for $750. I couldn't stop myself!

On the way home from meeting the guy half-way in Lafayette, CO, I stopped in 17 degree weather to shoot a few test shots with the 60D over the hood of the wife's car. After you look at the photo, I have a question for you crop-sensor knowledgeable shooters out there. First, though, there's my wife cell phone photo of her one-of-a-kind hood ornament.

Check the photo yet? No cheating. Can't read and answer the question until you check the quick shot I took at a Park-n-Ride by Colo Hwy 287. You can judge the photo if you like, just remember, I won't even pretend it was a "photo shoot." (FYI: I just used the Landscape setting on the dial. It chose to shoot at F/11, 1/400 sec, ISO-100, and I had it only at 78mm.)

The question: This is obviously an EF lens, not an EF-S. What's missing? But maybe you knew it would not be there. I was totally surprised by its absence.

OK. No one's yet guessed the feature I was surprised to be missing from my mountain view photo shot with this amazing EF L lens. The following picture was shot with my heretofore favorite telephoto on my succession of used Canons. It displays the feature I expected with any EF telephoto lens - based both on my limited experience and on conversations I've read on this board. But expecting it, I left myself cropping space.

Details: Shot on EOS 60D using Landscape Mode, f/8, 1/400, ISO-100, 142mm - Tamron 18-270 F/3.5-6.3
This compact tele will still be with me on lots of occasions!

Right you are, Rob909! Why is that? I mean, I love that, but did not expect it. Makes this L incredibly versatile, but I had missed that fact in everything I’ve read.

OK, it is the IS version .....the non-IS goes a bit cheaper but the non-IS is sharper with the 2X - according to Canon's MTF charts.

FWIW, the original EF 80-200 2.8 L is cheaper yet - but still great optical performance without Fluorite and, of course no IS !

You're lucky I didn't see the ad or there might've been a contest at that price even though I already have one. By the way, unless you're a Baptist Preacher's kid, like you and I, Southern, Baptist in my case even, that bit of irreverence probably flew right over. We, you and I and our brethren bpk's, speak a very special esoteric language that kinda sounds normal but really isn't even close.

I definitely wasted no time, gessman, when his ad lit the screen.

I'd have to say, if I hadn't spent so many Sunday afternoons at church potlucks, I might be surprised at a fellow bpk's willingness to try to beat me out of a prize. However, I've seen too many fellow church members battle over the last piece of my Mother's apple pie (or pecan pie) to be surprised at such mean-spiritedness.

Not related to photography at all (though my Dad always loved to take people pictures): Whenever a Southern Bapt church was within our reach while we were base-hopping away my youth, that's where my parents chose for us to attend. Until Virginia, where, years later my Mother let out that they came to differ with their brethern over welcoming black folks. I was stunned to realize in my later years that the church would not have welcomed anyone who walked in the door. Thereafter, we attended American Bapt, Independent, or whatever. After retirement, my father became a Baptist pastor for struggling churches in areas impacted by military bases. But I'm not aware that the Southern Baptist Convention ever promoted race division, so it's a shame one little country church could turn our family away like that. And we kids loved those folks, never knowing of the conflict.

You didn't loose $82. You still paid a good price for the lens. Places like Adorama and KEH may have multiple copies of the same lens, all optically in very good condition but listed at different prices because the outside of the barrel may be cleaner or brighter than another. Pristine copies of your lens may fetch up to $1250 or more. If you want a listing of ALL Canon bodies and lenses, check out CANON CAMERA MUSEUM. It has pretty much every camera, camera body and lens Canon has ever made listed, and a little history and specs on each. It even lists many original prices, in yen. It's virtually an online museum.

Thanks for the MUSEUM link, rmorrison1116! Fascinating! And it has helped me better evaluate and compare lenses I'm seeing in ads...not that I need anything more...well, maybe a fast prime for each of my cameras.

The museum is interesting, both for the cameras and lenses. But, you might find the camera and lens reviews of Canon EOS equipment more useful. See the zoom and prime links at: https://www.the-digital-picture.com/

Pecan Pie The last piece is worth at least a declaration of war, maybe even a crusade!

Unles someone baked so many that everyone was satisfied. But I am not sure there are enough pecans on the continent for that.

Sloscheider, only because I had seen it with any other EF (minus the S) lens I’d used AND had been told to expect it. Those telling may not have thought I’d understand that to encompass L glass as well, but why would I not, having had no experience with the cream of the crop? Though, in truth, I haven’t tried all that many different lenses, it had certainly been the case with my relatively expensive Tamron EF. So your response suggest it’s common knowledge, and I joyously accept that. I suspect you can imagine how pleased I am with what I see as the ultimate bonus. Grand surprise!

"Mean spirited..." nah, what I don't know doesn't hurt me. It's "open season." I'm glad you got a good deal. You might even be able to make a quick buck or two by putting it on ebay. It's not all that often that a person gets that kind of deal in this neck of the woods. People seem to hold onto their "L" lens and try to pawn off their aftermarket gems on us.

Aye, 't'was indeed a "warm and fuzzy" place for kids but there were always rules, some written, some un-, and that one about which you lament was an "un-" and I go way back - still is to a large extent in many places but rarely "taught" as such - just mainly not discussed so it never reaches the consciousness of the little folks. It just isn't often noted, doesn't get discussed, and is therefore rarely an issue 'til later when one breaks through that invisible parental shield that surrounds undesirable information.

Enjoy your "new" lens and I'll look forward to seeing your results. It's not like you don't have any subject matter. Cheers!
