A local Facebook Marketplace ad popped up as I was working up an ad for the Rebel T5i my granddaughter rejected in choosing I keep a T6 for her yearbook staff tool at high school (and more, I hope). It was an ad for a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens for $750. I couldn't stop myself!

On the way home from meeting the guy half-way in Lafayette, CO, I stopped in 17 degree weather to shoot a few test shots with the 60D over the hood of the wife's car. After you look at the photo, I have a question for you crop-sensor knowledgeable shooters out there. First, though, there's my wife cell phone photo of her one-of-a-kind hood ornament.

Check the photo yet? No cheating. Can't read and answer the question until you check the quick shot I took at a Park-n-Ride by Colo Hwy 287. You can judge the photo if you like, just remember, I won't even pretend it was a "photo shoot." (FYI: I just used the Landscape setting on the dial. It chose to shoot at F/11, 1/400 sec, ISO-100, and I had it only at 78mm.)

The question: This is obviously an EF lens, not an EF-S. What's missing? But maybe you knew it would not be there. I was totally surprised by its absence.

All Canon “L” series lenses are EF (not EF-S) and will work nicely on either crop or full frame Canons. The 70-200 f2.8 is one of the “holy trinity” and one of the most versatile and useful lenses (in spite of the weight). Enjoy - an excellent lens.

It looks like the tripod collar is there. Where is the lens hood? Both come standard with the f/2.8 70-200L zoom lens models. If you're not using a tripod / monopod, remove the collar for ease of use, placing it someplace safe and easily remembered. It's expensive to replace, so don't lose it. The hood should always be attached when using this and all lenses for better image quality and protection of the front lens element. Reverse the hood during transport and storage. Enjoy.

Yep, I have other EF lenses I use with the 60D, but this is my only L lens. What I get with the other EF lenses I did not get today with this EF L beauty....not referring to general photo quality issues, though.

And yes, TriX, I'm thinking of setting up a little shrine for this lens when it is at home. (Wait. My Army Master Sergeant turned Baptist pastor father would be turning over in his grave if he heard that joke!)

Yes, CHG_CANON, in my excitement, I left the lens hood in the bottom of the very classy lens case. (Why it wasn't reversed and attached I don't know.) After shooting in the snowfall, I kicked myself as I put the lens back in its case and noticed the hood.

I thought to grab the camera on my rush out of the house to be the first with cash to grab this beauty, but I did not think to grab my tripod. That's why my elbows were on the hood. Here https://kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/70-200mm-f28-is-ii.htm the reviewer suggests the IS is so good that a tripod is optional. We'll see.

👍

Really no need for a tripod in most conditions, for this lens or it’s bigger brother, the 100-400mm L IS II USM.

The IS is excellent. I don't know that I've ever shot my copy from a tripod.

There are three versions of that lens. I've seen the version you have, the original, for as low as $668 in very good condition at Adorama. It is an excellent lens, enjoy it.

rmorrison1116, the varieties of Canon models dizzies me. I really need to reference the company's master list, I suppose. On an ordinary item, I might grumble about that "lost" $82, but I'm so happy with having a complete, 1-owner pkg, I'm all smiles. I will look that up to see where this one sits in the line-up though. Thanks!

I'm getting old and wobbly, but if you have the time and space, even with IS, for anything over 100mm I like to use a tripod. Pictures just seem to be better.

OK. No one's yet guessed the feature I was surprised to be missing from my mountain view photo shot with this amazing EF L lens. The following picture was shot with my heretofore favorite telephoto on my succession of used Canons. It displays the feature I expected with any EF telephoto lens - based both on my limited experience and on conversations I've read on this board. But expecting it, I left myself cropping space.

Details: Shot on EOS 60D using Landscape Mode, f/8, 1/400, ISO-100, 142mm - Tamron 18-270 F/3.5-6.3
This compact tele will still be with me on lots of occasions!

You didn't loose $82. You still paid a good price for the lens. Places like Adorama and KEH may have multiple copies of the same lens, all optically in very good condition but listed at different prices because the outside of the barrel may be cleaner or brighter than another. Pristine copies of your lens may fetch up to $1250 or more. If you want a listing of ALL Canon bodies and lenses, check out CANON CAMERA MUSEUM. It has pretty much every camera, camera body and lens Canon has ever made listed, and a little history and specs on each. It even lists many original prices, in yen. It's virtually an online museum.

Have you tried higher shutter speeds. I don't know what camera you shoot with but the newer cameras handle higher ISO'S quite well and practically all noise is removable in post processing.
