Thank you but I am trying to decrease the load.

Have you tried a gimbal head? Buttery smooth, separate pan feature, but not so light.

I can't see where to get into the head and remove and replace lubricant. My husband thought that was what was needed as well but also couldn't see how to access the innards.

This is a good suggestion. Over time, lubricant can get gummy, making movement feel tight. The old lubricant can be removed with solvent and replaced with fresh...

Thank you for the links. I was hoping for lighter than the first two and the third one is about in the ballpark size wise but the consumer reviews were a bit iffy.

Ah, maybe this is it. Size is good, price is better. Do you like the quality?

Possibly/probably but where do you apply the lubricant? Everything looks sealed.

I will pull up whatever info I can, if they put it together, it can be taken apart and serviced. Give me the part/model number and I'll see what I can find out.

Yes RRS is great but very expensive. I have a good tripod and head so not wanting to spend "big bucks" on this project although they do have a micro ball+ panning head combination along with a table pod for under 300.00 that might be doable. I really like their table pods- very small and very very strong. Precise machining, no rough edges, no visible seams- quality. Hard to then buy something that is obviously inferior.

I have a couple of Vanguard Balls and find them to be adequate, but I also have a RRS BALL, but the price on that one was “almost rediculous.” I prefer balls, especially on a monopod, but generally almost always. BOB

There are some youtube videos, and Manfrotto has information on their website, AND, they sell parts if something needs to be replaced...… Suntouched, you may get the old Manfrotto head back tip-top for a song and a dance, and the others may be good for a tune-up too, if you want to save them. Let me know when you get a chance, I'd be happy to research it (I love keeping old gear going, and love DIY).

very similar to https://www.ebay.com/itm/264172470908 I have the much cheaper aluminium version which is around 6 oz heavier, there are a few brands selling essentially the same tripod

I read that overview and it doesn't say if it can "stand alone"

I'm on the hunt for a lightweight, buttery smooth, reasonably priced (around 300.00) panning monopod head to use for video. I don't care so much if it is a ball head or pan head as long as the panning motion has a separate control. I looked all afternoon today, including topics in UHH and what I found was heavy and cheap or lighter and very expensive (>500.00). I have a manfrotto pan that seems to have tightened up beyond being smooth and a Siru and Desmond that don't have the pan mode and both are too tight. By lightweight I mean < than 2 pounds. Don't get me wrong- cheap and good are ok lol.

The only thing I found is the RRS table top pod with micro panning ball head. And it just comes in at budget.

Anything I missed on my search?

I use a Sirui L-20S on a Benro C49F with legs. It doesn't have a panning arm, but I add a nodal rail slide if I need something to grab. It is not a fluid head, but the panning is smooth.
