I grew up in Detroit in the 50's and 60's and remember the city using army surplus Jeeps with a brush attachment to sweep the sidewalks. Great fun for us kids to see who got covered up the most with the flying snow.

I really appreciate them cleaning the streets and the ridge of hardened snow they put across my driveway entrance is easily taken care of by the metal blades on my snowblower,,,when they come by with the truck with the blade on I always wave my appreciation and get out of the way !!!

Good point. Didn't think of that considering I used to respond to "burnouts" on a regular basis.

As a kid in my old home town, there was a skinny "tractor/plow" that cleared all the sidewalks. It was really cool!! Snow falls were excellent opportunities for kids to earn a few quarters. We'd go door to door with shovels. It was fun and kept the little local candy store in business. Snow blowers seem to have put snow shoveling by kids out of business.
"The good old days" had lots of charm and was much healthier for kids.

When I was a kid in Western NY we had horse-drawn plows for the sidewalks. They pulled v-shaped plows and got everone's sidewalks cleared quickly. That ended in the early 50s, however.

This is why I live in California. It's a two-hour drive when I want to play in the white stuff, and I never have to shovel it.
