Gasping for air! They are focused on their traditional market very well. But that market group is shrinking. Photography is actually growing and Canon can't grasp it for fear of alienating their comfortable market.

Sorry...but isn't that what happened to Kodak?

Canon typically doesn't push the edge in technology. Their approach is conservative. They watch the market and then release a product when they see it being a safe bet.

Hmmm 3D FF 100MP 25% smaller in weight and dimension. Perhaps.

Cell phones will never replace the camera for serious photographers. I think Canon will continue to develop high quality gear.
I love my Canon gear and I will sooner or later get myself an R system. I will probably wait for the second gen system to come out as I have heard that it will be a big update. I've had hands on with the new R and overall it's a very good mirrorless camera. Well built, feels good in the hand and the lenses are top notch and yes - expensive.

The way Canon stocks have been tumbling downward for the last decade, those business decisions can't be all that smart.

Wow. Wonder whether you might be a retired Kodak exec?

The market is changing and saturated. They've held a commanding lead over any other manufacturer for over 20 years. Not too long ago Nikon was in financial trouble in 2017. Time will tell what happens. Admittedly shareholder stock is a governing force but they are still number 1 and sell more ILC's than onyone else.

Agree to a point. That point is that last sentence. They are not waiting for the safe bet. They are waiting until things pass proof of concept as tools useful to photographers. Like, I do not think we will see Canon rush to get 20 FPS. 20 FPS has limited usefulness until it starts to result in more keepers.

Canon 2018 Financial Results:
Operating Profits 2018 vs 2017
Office Systems +16.7%
Medical Systems + 31.4%
Industrial Systems + 60.9%
Imaging Systems (ie Cameras) - 32.6%

The smart business decision would be to get rid of Imaging Systems.

An obvious would be their holdout in the mirrorless market. Their MO in the past is wait and see, make a new product and capture the marketshare. I've read in several places Japan is owned by them in mirrorless now over Sony. I suspect Sony fanboys will argue that and I won't rebuttal that statement because statistics can be skewed. I suppose I should have just left it as "conservative in approach." Semantics will be tested with any more words added.

FTR I don't consider myself a Canon fanboy. To be perfectly honest, if I was to start all over I'm sure I would contemplate other options. Although, I'm satisfied with my choice presently.

There are going to be a breed of photographer that are just picture takers. That's it. There will still remain a group, perhaps small in number, that will continue to make photographs.

I think we can take some comfort in remembering that this is really the way it has always been. In fact, the segment that makes up the majority of this forum, retired folks with disposable income that want to make good pictures, is probably larger than it ever was in the film days. And there have always been folks who are "just pictures." They are just more visible now that their images can be shared digitally, and they take more pictures because more pictures no longer has to mean more rolls of film and more processing, with the associated cost and turnaround time. The cell phones that we fret about and worry over now are no different than the Instamatics and Polaroids of earlier years.

How many of us would be as passionate about photography if we had to shell out money for film and processing and take the time and trouble to change film rolls every 10 or 12 or 20 or 24 or 36 exposures?

I agree, I think a 5DS/R replacement this year and their first 1Dx replacement in time for 2020 games.

Canon, most likely, will have available, their Canon 1DX Mark 3 for the 2020 Olympics. What features it will have over its predecessor is unknown. One thing is certain though. It will be better. And cost will be $6000+.

Canon will make it, but it I think it will be a slow climb on a very steep hill to surpass Sony. 18-24 months may leave them on the slope panting. I do not think Sony will stop or slow down long enough for them to catch up much less surpass. IMO, it's not about the bazillions of product features, it's about the best sensor.
Forget the video on a DSLR or MILC. Give us a well built, water-resistant body with a minimum of well engineered features and a sensor that knocks it out of the park. Yeah, I know ........... but I can dream. LOL

I need a good compact camera. Please don’t sneer at me.
I refuse to carry around heavy, bulky glass. I love my Canon G7x-1. But would like to upgrade.
I tried my son’s Sony Rx100. But it lacked a touchscreen. And the Sony menus are so compmlicated. Why can’t Sony make an Rx100 model with a decent touchscreen and menues that are less complicated?? All mentions of the Rx100 models praise this camera but damn its menue system and lack of a decent touchscreen, even in the Mark 5 or 6 model.
