The writer here told us there's a beta product out there and that it's free. So, let the skeptics try it out and report back. I'd really like to hear your reactions after you've done everything you can with the product.

My two cents. ;-)

Not quite... op stated there is a new product, and you can get a free trial.

All Topaz products can be downloaded and tried for about 30 days, new or old.

If the product is a “in studio” app, the free trial will show up in studio after an update

A.I. Clear I have to admit did some good magic.

I shoot raw so I do not see a need for jpg to raw conversion, but it does not hurt to look at the possibilities it might offer, knowing the process is like using frog DNA to make clones of dinosaurs! We all know how that worked out for Jurassic Park!

You're welcome. I knew posting the heretical notion of a program that can convert jpegs to raw files would ruffle a few sanctimonious feathers on this forum.

Just got an email from Topaz Labs. They are touting a new program that converts JPEG files to RAW files.
It's $79 for the program, but there is a free trial version.
Some info from the email...

Edit JPEGs as if you shot them in RAW.

Topaz JPEG to RAW AI uses machine learning to do what was previously impossible: turn JPEGs into high-quality RAWs for a better editing experience. Ever come across the perfect shot and all you had was your phone? Now you can take the shot, then take your compressed JPEG image and convert it to RAW in Topaz JPEG to RAW AI. It's the next best thing to having your trusty camera gear on hand! With JPEG to RAW AI, you can prevent banding, remove compression artifacts, recover detail, and enhance dynamic range. As the first and only A.I. software for transforming your JPEGs into RAW files, what used to be impossible is now possible.

Its still not possible! It may turn the jpeg into a more workable file, but it will not give it the power of a raw file, because most of the data has already been lost and it can not be recovered, its just as clipped lights can not be recovered in exposure, one can not get back, what is not there to begin with!

Yep, and what about them damn airplanes - we all know they're not gonna fly. A lot of us "dumb end users" who had one foot in the film world and the other in the early digital world and have a slew of family shots at 320x240 or 640x480 long before we were fed any information about Raw and may have some interest in reaching back and reviving some of those images. I, for one, appreciate the efforts of those who are working to make that possible even if we are still in the primitive growing stages and have to drink a little snake oil as we morph. It's a step n the right direction as far as I'm concerned.

Trials don't stick around forever. Why not get it now and try it out? Then you will have that arrow in your quiver should the need arise.

Man people get way too torqued up over things.
Use it, don't use it, try it don't try it.
But to just arbitrarily dismiss it is pretty elitist.
JMO.

I’m not an elitist, but I do recognize snake oil remedies.

This may well help with images buggered up prior, but it can’t possibly reinsert the deleted data.

The best I could imagine would be a mathematical guess as to what might have been lost.

Have your best gear with you, that's why you bought it.
Or live with the memory in your mind and save $79 ....
What's that old yarn about the sow's ear?

That's a good idea in theory but do you have your camera gear 24/7 as much as you have your phone with you?

Actually, it's more likely that I have a camera with me than a phone ...

Today's "snake oil remedies" are tomorrows filters.
People probably said the same thing about "content aware" or the "healing brush".

"The best I could imagine would be a mathematical guess as to what might have been lost".
But really isn't that a lot of photoshop when you start re-sampling and downsizing or upsizing?
There's a lot of "missing" data that's interpreted by surrounding pixels.

I think you should read up more on CIZ - AFAIK, it is closer to AI than not - and is most certainly proprietary to Sony !

I think you are on to something. In searching, I did find this:

Folks, the whole idea of digital photography is an INTERPOLATION - which is basicly an educated GUESS as to what it should really be - there are no differences with AI, CIZ, bicubic, or any other computational application !

It will be just another AI enhancement technique.
