I did not want to give more space to what Big Mike1 said. The subject was "Best Practice Recommendations for Printing" which I believe was in the main section of the Forum. Date was January 24th for whoever wants to look it up. Again, "mild" "casual" in my opinion are words of excuse and the comment has no place in a photography forum.

Some of us did look it up.

"Off color?" The poster used an ancient antisemitic slur, one that is a key rationalization for centuries of persecution and murder. I agree with those saying there should be zero tolerance for h**e speech.

It seems to me the ones who are "snowflakes" are the ones who whine then they are confronted for their h**e speech.

Really Mike? This entire thread is a gross over reaction, the poster should not have said it, with that I agree, but if the OP on this thread is so thin skinned to react the way he/she/Q did, then he/she/Q is also a part of the problem, there is no call to ban anyone.

Mr. Bob, one thing that you may have not noticed is that the Attic if it is not the top hit forum on the site then it certainly is in the top three, it is a revenue driver. I don't see a problem with its presence, it clearly is easy to avoid, just don't go there, you do have that choice. I would however recommend that the Admin leave Attic Topics off of his daily news letter so as not to attract the unsuspecting into that forum.

By the way, the fact that people are ignorant about the history and the implications of a bigoted remark do not make it innocuous.

Funny, people here get quite upset - long threads of angry and defensive responses - when their favorite brand of camera equipment is criticized. But a few of us suggest that bigoted and hostile remarks aimed at an historically persecuted and abused ethnic group might be a bad idea, and OMG we are accused of overreacting, of being snowflakes, wh**ever.

His remarks as misguided and ignorant as they were were directed at no one and were not intended to harm anyone, if you want to be honest his statement was a common joke in a by gone period in this country, hopefully the individual will come across this thread and learn from it.

Yours and the OP's reactions are just a bit much.

"Intentions" can never be known, and are no excuse.

That was never a "common joke," and for hundreds of years that bigoted concept was closely associated with persecution and abuse.

If my reaction, and the reactions of others, were anywhere nearly adequate, the controversy would cease, and as you say perhaps people could learn something. But the ignorance and bigotry not only continues, it grows. Ergo, I conclude that we have not spoken out against it enough, and that our reactions, far from being "just a bit much," are apparently nowhere nearly strong enough.

I recommend A Convenient Hatred: The History of Antisemitism

https://www.amazon.com/Convenient-Hatred-History-Antisemitism/dp/0981954383

Some reviews:

"At last, a book that tells the history of Jews, with all the facts substantiated with historical documents, all carefully footnoted. The few pages on the history of how the Jews returned to England under Cromwell is especially enlightening. The book is very accurate, and the author took great trouble to steer a course between missing out all the fine, sometimes gory, details and overdoing it. Recommended to Jews and non-Jews alike."

"A Convenient Hatred: the History of Antisemitism is a must-read for anyone who not only wants to understand what antisemitism IS but where it came from and HOW this long history of oppression affects our world today. The millennia-long attempts to eradicate a civilization - and make no mistake, the Jewish people fit all the standard definitions of a civilization - from the earth is readable from first page to last. Well-written and with abundant citations to readily-available sources, the book is unbiased and presents history in a way that lets the reader decide, as each block of time is described, for himself or herself the impact of the actors' deeds and misdeeds."

Quick solution, don't use the site. I am going to unwatch this thread so there will be no more responses from me, but banning a member for making an unfortunate and misguided use of humor that was directed at no one in particular in my opinion is a gross over-reaction.

Bigotry is not "a misguided use of humor that was directed at no one in particular."
