Well, if you had read the Washington Post (a closed mind does not gather intelligence), in addition to knowing how to correctly spell the name of the newspaper, you would have found that the hedgehog is not native to North America and is considered an "exotic" animal, which is why it was on the prohibited list.
You would have also found that there were sound reasons to ban them as pets since they can't be released into the wild (the cold of Washington, northern Virginia winters would likely kill them) and many people find that after the novelty wears off, they don't want them as pets and turn them over to a shelter which doesn't find much call for hedgehogs.
And for every hedgehog bought another dog/cat dies in an animal shelter.
