The only issue with making reservations is that if you are off by a week or more there could be little color or few leaves. There are a bunch of sites that try to estimate peak times based on rainfall and weather patterns. For more info:

You'll be in Adirondack State Park, which is unlike any other. It encompasses a massive portion of New York, including the area you're headed into. We visited that area after my daughter received her degree from R.I.T. It's gorgeous just driving through it. The streams and lakes are beautiful. I'm from Michigan and I have to say that up state New York is even more beautiful.

Upper State New York is one area of the country I would to visit for their fall colors.

I have traveled east to New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick but never New York.

Planning on a trip this fall (early October) and was planing on visiting Lake Placid, Lake George and Long Lake areas.

I was wondering if you could give me some suggestions of places to visit and maybe some areas to avoid.

I am still fairly active for a male in his 70's and have no difficulty hiking moderate trails in the Rockies.

thanks

The traditional time for the fall colors is Columbus Day weekend but this varies depending on the weather. I was back in NY in October and the colors were delayed about two weeks according to my relatives. I wanted to hike one of the high peaks but due to timing and the weather, I did shorter day hikes. The two I enjoyed were Poke-O-Moonshine and a climb up Rodgers Rock.

This is a quick guide - but it really does depend on current weather:

Just about anywhere that has an overview - will give you spectacular color.

Depends on who you ask.

From Wikipedia: "Upstate New York is the portion of the American state of New York lying north of the New York metropolitan area. The Upstate region includes most of the state of New York, excluding New York City, the Lower Hudson Valley, and Long Island, although the precise boundary is debated.[1][2] Major cities in Upstate New York include Buffalo, Rochester, Albany, and Syracuse.[2][3]"

My daughter lives in Syracuse. They do not refer to the area as "upstate". It's referred to as "Central" NY. There is a lot of real estate north and east of Syracuse where the Adirondacks begin and then head North. We once drove to the Adirondack area and it was a good 2-2 1/2 hour drive from Syracuse. We also drove to the finger lakes area, from Syracuse, and it was about 1 1/2 hours to the first finger lake, Skanatelas (sp?). A very beautiful area and a perfect day trip from Syracuse. From Maryland, Syracuse is about a 6 hour drive.
My 2 cents.

Also, don't forget the Catskills where I live, it is beautiful here in the fall. Try hiking the Basha Kill.

I was born in Manhattan and once considered anything north of the George Washington Bridge to be upstate ! ;-) I have since rehabilitated my attitude. I would now consider anything north of West Point or Newburgh - the northern reaches of an approximately hourlong (no traffic) commute to Manhattan, and about where people stop calling Manhattan "The City" - to be upstate. I would be interested to hear from a true Upstater.
And yes, Upstate is a different animal.

I would make hotel reservations early. It is a very popular area. https://www.visitlakegeorge.com/things-to-do Those "Upstaters" are a funny lot. If you hear banjo's playing it's best to move on.

My thoughts exactly. On the book early. I was born and raised in SW PA and made frequent trips to West by God Virginia. Banjos don't bother me at all.

Another great spot to visit and should be very good color there, I haven't driven all of it but I've been told that Rt 28 circles from near Lake George to Blue Mountain Lake and then down to Kingston on the edge of Catskill Park, good scenery around there. You'll find nice shots available almost everywhere in NYS, I drove to Niagara Falls using some local highways and went through several small picuresque towns, of course my wife did not really want to stop and take pictures so...

Oh. I forgot. Plan ahead for when you are near Hyde Park. Prior to the start of a semester, the CIA (Culinary Institute of America) opens up reservations for their restaurants. The food is outstanding, the service is phenomenal and the prices are cheap, for what you get. What you get is service from students in their last days at the institute before they go out to top restaurants world wide. They rotate through different jobs, but your waiter will probably be running a great restaurant next year. And your bus person and the line cooks. You will never have a meal provided by a more highly trained and skilled group in your life! The experience is awesome. But it takes planning ahead.

I live 20 mins. from the Canadian's border, now this area is part of Northern New York. Town I live in is call Moira. (Look it up on a map) Today temperature at 10:00 AM is +5 degree. Lake Placid is hour and half South of here by car. I remember when I work in New York City, people through I was Canadian. PS: Lake George and Lake Placid are none but travel trips. Yes, the area is great in Oct. but so is this area.

Having lived in Saranac Lake, just down the road from Lake Placid, NY, for 25 years I can heartily recommend stopping in this area. If you take I-87 north to Exit 28 and travel west on Rte 73 to Lake Placid there are great views all along this route. The colors can start to develop as early as the third week in August (East of Tupper Lake) some years and are generally at their best in the 2nd or 3rd week in September. A drive north up Rte 3 out of Saranac Lake toward Donnely's Corner offers a great view of Whiteface Mountain in the distance with Fall colors in the foreground. The Whiteface Mountain Ski Area operates its chairlift and gondola during the foliage season with impressive views. A drive through Tupper Lake, then down through Long Lake and Blue Mountain Lake and east toward Lake George will bring you back to I-87. Early snowfalls in October in the mountains can bring the leaves down.

I don't know where he is coming from, he may be driving right thru the Finger Lake Area on his way North.
