Upper State New York is one area of the country I would to visit for their fall colors.
I have traveled east to New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick but never New York.
Planning on a trip this fall (early October) and was planing on visiting Lake Placid, Lake George and Long Lake areas.
I was wondering if you could give me some suggestions of places to visit and maybe some areas to avoid.
I am still fairly active for a male in his 70's and have no difficulty hiking moderate trails in the Rockies.
thanks

The Finger Lakes region is a beautiful area with Watkins Glen as a premier State Park.
Thanks. Did not think of this area
Finger Lakes are a long way from where he's talking about

I would make hotel reservations early. It is a very popular area.

High Falls Gorge is near Lake Placid and was stunning early October 2018. Worth the trip.
You could probably get several weeks of shooting by starting near the Canadian border and working south along Lake Champlain, Lake George and then down the Hudson Valley ending in New York City. Near the border is Ausable Chasm, and depending on your route south lots of lakes and mountains.

I second the vote for Finger Lakes Region. Lots of incredible views, waterfalls, and vineyards/wineries.
Shoot down Cayuga Lake from a hillside at Ithaca (home of Cornell University) if you want vivid fall colors, blue lake water and incredible landscape.

Before you meet any of the locals, be aware that the region is known as "Upstate NY."

Not to be funny but what do you consider Upstate NY. For many it's anything north of NYC.
The areas you mentioned are in the Adirondack Mountains. My brother lives in Tupper Lake, 20 miles from Long Lake. If you have been to Vermont, NH etc. you have already seen fall foliage in the mountains. Although the Adirondacks are beautiful in the fall, you might also want to consider areas more to the west, such as others have mentioned, like the Finger Lakes etc. If you do go to the Adirondacks, a good climb for you might be Mt. Ampersand which has some nice streams to photograph, as well as a great view of other peaks and the Saranac Lakes. Early October would be a good time to make the trip.

Depends on who you ask.
From Wikipedia: "Upstate New York is the portion of the American state of New York lying north of the New York metropolitan area. The Upstate region includes most of the state of New York, excluding New York City, the Lower Hudson Valley, and Long Island, although the
precise boundary is debated.[1][2] Major cities in Upstate New York include Buffalo, Rochester, Albany, and Syracuse.[2][3]"
Make it at least mid-October. Gore Mt. and Jay Peak. Ausable Chasm if you’re way up there.
