Sony just announced their new crop sensor mirrorless. No its NOT called an a7000, the numbering is a throwback and its called an a6400.
24MP, $900 for body only, other specs are coming out soon.

This new A6400 is an entry-level new APS-C from Sony. The upcoming Sony A7000 will be Sony's new Pro-level APS-C to go up against the stellar new Fuji XT3. The A7000 will be a mini-A9 and will have 4k/60p video also like the Fuji XT3 and priced similar. The A7000 may be announced at WPPI in February or at NAB in spring. Sony will continue to make the A6000, A6300 and A6500, but will move further upscale with the A7000 being their new top-of-the-line APS-C camera. Also coming the Sony Fullframe A7SIII.

For full A6400 specs, I found this on line: https://www.sony.com/electronics/interchangeable-lens-cameras/ilce-6400/specifications?cpint=SG_PRODUCT_DETAILS_PRI-TOUT-PDP-ILCE-6400-EN_GL-2018-11-M01-GRABBEST#specifications

Maybe the step up from the A6300 to the A6400 means the addition of a touchscreen interface. That would be a good thing.

I saw the specs last night and it does indicate a touch screen, but the biggie is there is no stabilization in camera. 4000K video and a few other things that sounded geared toward video, but the no stabilization would kill it for me.

If I had just the A6000, or didn't have a mirrorless camera and was looking for one, I'd probably consider the A6400, for the touch screen and updated processor. But already having the A6300, I'd skip the new one and go straight for the A6500. I'm not interested in video, so that's not a big draw for me, but I think a touch screen would be handy. The upcoming A7000, assuming it's a reality, would most likely be out of my reach. But if I were looking at that level a camera, I think I'd toss my money at an Olympus OMD-EM1iii.

The new a6400 with the 18-135 lens is a great deal at around $1150 (Amazon price). B&H price is $1298 with the 18-135. I use that lens on an A6000 and love it. My only question on the new a6400 is "Have they improved the battery and the battery usage?" It would be nice to be able to go out on an all-day shoot using only ONE battery. That is my only complaint on the Sony line.

The a6400 however, like its latest full-frame counterparts, can be powered directly by any power bank (cell phone battery pack).

But I hear ya. I much prefer the FZ100 batteries over the older, shorter-life batteries no matter how small and inexpensive they were.

I got the same in an email from Sony. Was disappointed that not much in the line of specifications was offered. Like, the 5-axis stabilization of the 6500. I have the 6300 - the sensor of of same size and pixels. So I can't see how I would benefit.

The additions to the A6400 from the A6300 are very much intended for video enthusiasts - of which there are few on this site. I see no significant reason why a still photographer would feel the need to buy the A6400.

As stated before there is no IBIS and the flip screen only flips up to face forward so if something is mounted on top the flip screen is useless.
Rehashed old sensor it looks like as well.
Not much innovation.

I love it Architect1776 when you don't do your homework. lol

Watch the Sony introduction video, the A6400 has new tech in autofocusing (The world's now fastest autofocus and subject aquisition of ANY camera at 0.02 sec). The fastest before was the A9 at 0.05. The new firmware updates for the A9 will increase it to this speed. And the A6400 has new tech in Artificial Intelligence in real-time subject tracking and EYE-AF , including Animal EYE-AF in firmware update. And HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) plus SLogs in video among other features.Newly added 1:1 aspect ratio for easier social-media shots. And this is for an entry-level APS-C camera. The upcoming Sony APS-C A7000 will be a mini-A9 with many of its features, and have 4k/60p and more to match or exceed the Fuji XT3.

I personally am not buying this A6400. I have already the A6500, A7RIII and A7III and will wait for the A7000, and the A7SIII. Cheers

Also forgot, the new A6400 will let you select left or right eye in Eye-AF. The A6400 also uses a new processor built from the A9's exclusive processor that NO other camera has. Plenty of new tech.

I just read about this and it sounds like it has more to offer than the a6500 for less $$$. Looks like a couple of new lens options, too.

Sony also announced firmware updates for the a9 in March and the a7riii and a7iii in April that will include the new real-time eye AF feature like the new a6400.

Other features include the new real time eye AF, the new real time tracking, 425 AF points, 11 FPS, autofocus in 0.02 seconds, and of course, the flip up screen for selfies if you’re into that. Eye AF for animals is coming in the summer but will be included in the April update for the a7***
