Good friend let me use his Sony a7iii with a 50mm f/1.4 Zeiss Planar AZ FE lens. Took some great shot even in low light. My question to fellow Hogs is, are any of you familiar with this camera and how well does the adapter for Canon lenses work? Thank you in advance for all your comments and help. I am a Canon shooter with several "L" lenses. Would it be worth using with my present set of lenses?

Adapters are what they are, but, I've heard a lot of buzz about the advisability of using "L" glass with such camera. No personal experience here, but thus far, all I read is good.

Have you used a ZEISS Planar T* 50mm f/1.4 ZE Lens in a Canon mount on your current body?
Or your current lenses with an 50MP EOS 5DS? Or with a low-pass filter cancelled EOS 5DSr?
A Metabones Canon EF to Sony E-Mount Adapter will set you back another $400 on top of a Sony body that is not a game-changer vs Canon's two 50MP bodies nor the 30MP 5DIV.

Megapixels schmegapixels. Meaningless. Low
pass filters no big deal.

Nobody asked about megapixels. This thread
is spozed to be on adapters and compatibility.

The EF lenses on the E-mount bodies are very
useful, but certainly don't behave like native
E-mounts. I don't have the a7-3 but I do use
adapted EF lenses on an a6500 which is quite
similar as to tech level and firmware. AF-S is
pretty quick, maybe 1/4 sec, using PDAF. The
CDAF is crazy slow, like using a Canon SLR in
Live View AF mode. AF-C is not reliable.

USM ring drive lenses AF best. STM lenses AF
fast enuf to be useful. Other lenses, mostly
non USM older lenses, will hardly AF at all.

There may be some difference using an a7-3
rather than an a6500 ... but it will be similar.

How right you are. I guess I need to wipe off my terminal since I misread and inserted an 'R' into the Sony model. My response must have been confusing for a question about just another 24MP body, without reference to the OP's current body that is likely their basis for comparison. For the best AF performance for an adapted lens instead of the native lenses, our OP should consider the best rated adapter.

Here is my experience with Sigma's MC-11 adapter. I have a Sony A7ii that I wanted to adapt Canon's 100-400 L IS mk2 to it. Continuous AF and Single Shot modes worked great. Focus was quick and accurate. MF and DMF modes were grayed out. This combination produced great reach for the Sony A7ii. Decided to upgrade the MC-11 firmware to the latest version. Now nothing works! Lens will hunt in AF-C mode and will not focus. It will occasionally focus in AF-S mode but unreliably. This combination is essentially unusable now. I knew I was taking a chance with the camera lens combo seeing as how Sigma indicates only Sigma lenses with Canon mounts will work on Sony cameras using the MC-11 adapter. Currently there is no way to restore an earlier MC-11 firmware version without sending it back to Sigma. It is always possible that future MC-11 firmware upgrades may restore Canon lens compatibility with Sony.

Sigma MC-11 adapter gets good reviews and at $250 is a whole lot less expensive than the $400 Metabones. There are also $199 Vello and Fotodiox adapters, don't know much about them, how they compare to the more expensive ones. There are also $99 Vello and Fotodiox adapters, which I think are plastic instead of metal (not sure).

All the above are "smart" adapters that support autofocus, image stabilization and - probably most importantly - aperture control.

Avoid the $15 to $20 "dumb" adapters. Those are used to adapt the old Canon FD/FL lenses to Sony. They won't work with the modern EF/EOS lenses.

I agree
Fotodiox adapter a bit slow w Canon lenses
MC-11 is much better. Take care to check with Sigma site for which lenses are compatible
Have fun!

The MC-11 Adapter is the best for Canon lenses on Sony. I have used it for years with Canon glass on my Sony A6500, A7RIII and A7III. It has been on sale for $149 through the holidays, regular price is $249. Still a great buy at regular price. BTW I have used both and the MC-11 works better than the Metabones (and costs much less). The MC-11 is the best selling and most widely used Canon lens to Sony camera adapter.

I have the Sigma MC-11 and it works fine on my Sony a7s and a6000. A friend has the Metabones adapter and it appears to be not quite as fast as the Sigma adapter

I use the Metabones III &IV and Sigma MC-11 adapters for all my Canon lenses on Sony A7S, A7 II and A7R II with good results. I prefer the MC-11 adapter; less expensive and better performance.

I also have several low end adapters for manual lenses; inexpensive enough to simply leave them on lenses when they're not being used. I adapter older Canon, Pentax, Minolta, Tamron, Sigma, M42 and other lenses to Sony FE mount.

The Sigma MC-11 is supposed to be really good, although I don't shoot Sony I purchased a Sigma Art lens and the MC-11 was included, I don't know why the lens was brand new and still the best price. At any rate I sold that adapter for $200 on ebay and about a month later the buyer left feed back indicating he was thrilled with his purchase. The reviews I have read on the adapter rate it as best.

I bought a Canon 80D 3 years ago and Sony7Riii last year. The local camera store sold me a Fotodiox Pro EF-Sny(E) converter which allows me to adapt all my Canon lens to the Sony. Testing all my Canon lenses with the converter, the results are:

Canon EFS 55-250- Auto focus worked. Lost about 5% of the frame to corner vingnetting throughout the zoom range.

Canon EFS 10-18- Auto focus did not work. About the same vignetting.

Samyang 2.8/14mm prime lens with only manual focus - no vignetting

Tamron 150-600- Auto focus worked. No vingnetting throughout the zoom range.

Overall I can live with all these and frequently use the Tamron in particular.

Hope that helps.
