Hi, all!
I need advice. I have been taking photographs of the basketball games at my local college. After a couple of years doing this, I have gotten results that, although they may not be up to pro level, nonetheless satisfy me.

I would like to share my better images with the players. I need a program where they can not only look at the pictures, but also might be able to download them and print them on their own.

What is the best and simplest to use program I can get for this job?

Additionally, I have no interest in selling the images. I am happy to give them away to the players and coaches. Are there any legal issues I should worry about?

I have used Shutterfly for that same purpose with my grandkids' sport teams. It works very well. I always gave my images to the kids/parents, ... I photographed basketball, baseball, volleyball & soccer. You can configure privacy settings so that images may be downloaded. https://www.shutterfly.com/nav/signedOutShare.sfly

Flickr is free, whether the images can be viewed-only or available for download is simply a matter of how you set the privacy settings on the images when stored to the site. The "free" limit is only how many you want to upload per day or keep on their site in total. The technical skills needed of your target audience is low as most of your audience will typically be view-only. To share you just need to send a URL link to all the images, or to individual albums should you organize the images into albums, such as 1 per game, etc.

If you are in the Adobe CC system with the Lightrooms, there is a way to create "Web Galleries" for groups of images that can be shared using a link. This is an example of some desert walk images from a few weeks ago: https://adobe.ly/2ETIedP

As of January 1, 2019 the free site at Flickr is limited to 1000 photos total. Over that amount of photos and the next step will cost about $50.00 per year.

For the past 3 seasons I have been photographing my grandsons’ ice hockey games. The coaches of both of their teams have set up a page on “Teamsnap” which is an App/website through which they communicate all sorts of info to the members and parents. There is a “Media” page on the site where after each game, I post a variety of photos which the players and parents can easily download. As of now, There is a gallery of 3 seasons of games with an average of 50 shots per game posted. The day After each game, the photos are the highlight of discussion in the cafeteria. We’ve recently started posting videos on the site too. The kids and parents live them and eagerly await the postings after each game.
Lical newspapers covering the game get their photos from the site. Some even will throw in a photo credit line.

There are no legal issues since the site belongs to the team and the photos do not depict any event where there might be an expectation of privacy.
Some common sense tips:
1) limit your shots to the game, team members, opponents and coaches on the ice, court, field, etc.
2) no photos in the locker room. EVER.
3) don’t sell the photos-put them on the site for the players, parents and school to use as they choose, free of charge.
4) Avoid posting embarrassing photos.

Another good option for photo sharing is Google Photos or Apple Photos.

I use Amazon Prime to back up all of my photos in full resolution. You can create individual albums that can be shared with anyone even if they don’t have Amazon Prime.

I have also used Dropbox which works well. Facebook also is an option as someone mentioned, except you lose a bunch of resolution with Facebook’s compression of photos.

Mac's have Photo Sharing built into the system and can be setup for automatic sending to iPhone & Mac Users every time you post new photos i.e. Album Family Photos. You can also send the album weblink to non-mac & iPhone users.
