Linda I have to say I think you have submitted much better photos but I do like this one. The term, sentries is a bit corny but just a bit, mind you. I like the black and white and also like that the sentry on the right is leaning toward the tree line causing me to look that way. So for me it is a sort of leading line though short. I am left wondering what is on the left side of the sentries. Is it more orchard or maybe an open field?

I like your last iteration best. To me there was just something wrong, I don't know what, about the images with two heaters. Wonderful sepia effect.

Smudge pots as used in the Santa Clara Valley of the 40s and 50s were No. 10 tin cans filled with disel fuel and distributed throughout the orchard. When a freeze was expected they were lighted (lit?) and burned through the night. In the morning you waked through the orchard and put a board on top of each one to snuff it out. Smoke was everywhere, things were dirty but we had Apricots for market.

Thank you for your frank appraisal, Dennis. If your question is not rhetorical, the answer is "there was more orchard"

Appreciate your time very much.

Thanks Linda. I think honestly it was a little of both. I was imagining the kerosene pots more in the left or right middle of the scene with perhaps the rows of trees behind it for a photo.

I have quite a few shots from that location, as well as quite a collection of pot shots - big and small - from years of roaming the orchards of Yakima County

Linda from seeing your work I would put money on almost all of them being great photographs too.

I'm going to suggest a bit of crop and slight change in perspective here to help draw attention to the Sentries. Love the processing and look of this.

I like this crop. It makes the smudge pots the heroes of the image and places them solidly in their environment.

I’d try juxtaposing the the two heaters Linda, the leaning one is too central perhaps?

Kerosene heaters are used in commercial fruit orchards to protect delicate buds from late spring freezes. Some of the dedicated veterans remain at their posts throughout winter. (too corny? )

Your feedback is welcomed.

Dave C1 suggested a crop that I think works well. Your title suggest that the "smudge pots" are the subject. Of course they need a bit of context. I believe that the right third of your image is a bit too much context. The fact that there is a tree right behind the "sentries" puts us in an orchard as much as the entire frame without a crop.

I also noticed something that came up in my shooting in Charleston recently. I found that the black and white images I shot of the trees around the houses (crepe myrtle, I believe) were easy to over-expose. This seems to have occurred in your photo as well. Over all the tones are quite nice and I think you did a good job of putting us in a specific place at a specific time. I can well imagine cold nights where these heaters would be invaluable. With leaves on the branches we might not get the same impression.

Thanks very much, Dave. I have a lot of these subjects, so more instructive (for me) to probably review other compositions.

Many thanks for your time, Erich. The lightest part of the tree trunk is probably where it's wrapped (insects or protect against some of the chemical spray?). Probably easy to fix. Appreciated!
