Kerosene heaters are used in commercial fruit orchards to protect delicate buds from late spring freezes. Some of the dedicated veterans remain at their posts throughout winter. (too corny? )

Interesting take.

Even more interesting for me is a quandary: in your hops drying shot the strong angular pole worked well in pulling the eye back from the forced travel to the right. Here however, the two heaters just create an awkward imbalance for me. Perhaps because they take up an entire side? Perhaps I am wrong?

That's a terrific observation, Bob, thank you! Of course, now I can't un-see it Two other possibilities, neither satisfactory IMO. I'll go back with a fresh eye to my other shots from that outing.

Linda, I think your second revision works for me, a sort-of "warming pot overseeing orchard." I did some toning to let the pot stand out more.

Nice processing, Linda. What you’ve done with the photo certainly makes it look vintage rather than current.

Thanks, John. I took a bunch of steps (including b&w at reduced opacity) to get to what ended up looking just like sepia

Officer and XO checking the formation line up, of course. The XO is stretching to check the line. (One had to be in the military in one of their former lives.)

I like the repetition of the lines.

I go with the first presentation in that it shows a dynamic at work.

Much appreciated, Stephen! And yep, that was a former life of mine also

This image takes me back to the days when I lived in the citrus groves east of Mesa. We called them smudge pots.

I like the original image. The heaters are the subject of the image, so why shouldn't they take up a lot of space. And the fact that they're not symmetrical draws even more attention to them. And the bent one politely leads into the grove, so it helps the viewer see the rest of the image. so that we know the context.

Thanks very much, Kathy! Yes, I believe smudge pots are the original name and a friend here talks of her childhood among the orchards, the black smoke produced that got into their homes and clothing.

I just looked up some history on Wikipedia that talks about the reason for the word "smudge." A lot more to their usage than just heat, it turns out.

Linda -- perhaps the title of the thread/photograph influenced my perception, but the original version is intriguing, to me. The two heaters could be sentries. Possibly beefeaters, with the very tall head wear. The one on the right has his helmet cocked back, and is talking to the other one. That is the very first thing that came to mind, when I looked at the shot. I like it the way it is.

Hi Jim, yes I shamelessly directed people to see what I wanted them to see via that descriptive title Many thanks for your comments and your imagination!

I'm going to suggest a bit of crop and slight change in perspective here to help draw attention to the Sentries. Love the processing and look of this.
