Don't dismiss the Riverwalk. It is more than just the very popular restaurant area. In 2007 I walked it all the way to the dam.

You are correct. There are plenty of photo opportunities along the Riverwalk.

For birding try Mitchell Lake water treatment plant near San Antonio, and Warblerwoods in Cibolo, also near San Antonio.

Keep in mind that Big Bend is over 400 miles from San Antonio, and so huge that it's not exactly a "day trip." I believe if you're interested in Big Bend you should consider dedicating some time doing it.

We went to the whooping crane sanctuary. From the observation point the birds looked like specks. If you're going, bring a really long lens.

I've lived in S Texas for 28 years. Nothing here in this hot, windy, dry hellhole. Save your money and travel somewhere nicer! I retired from a Govt job here in McAllen but cant afford to move away from here.

Nothing there but some of the best locations for photographing birds and other wildlife that can be found in the world. Google bird photography in the Rio Grand Valley. Santa Clara and Laguna Seca are two ranches that I have been to and can recommend highly.

Those are a very long way from South Texas. A totally separate trip. Google maps is your friend to assess some of those distances.

I can't add to the suggestions in the San Antonio-Rockport areas for birding. Folks covered those bases pretty well. I also recommend Corpus/South Padre. Since you're birding, you may want to consider a long lens and some friends run Corpus Christi Camera and they rent lenses.

I am headed to the San Antonio area mid-February for a few days before heading down to the Rockport, TX area to photograph the Whooping Cranes. I plan on "doing" the Alamo and the Missions National Historical Park. I'm not too keen on the Riverwalk, but will probably go there just to say that I had seen it. I am more excited about rivers, waterfalls, birds, etc. I want to travel the Painted Church trail tour, and if I have time, see the Attwater Prairie Chicken Reserve. I will have about 3 days in San Antonio, 3 days in the Rockport area, and 3 days to roam around as I like. What suggestions do those of you living in this area have for places that are a "must see."

Thanks.

Look up references of things to see & do (and photograph) in the Hill Country since you're there for a few days....one of the best parts of Texas, absolutely beautiful area. Night time is great on River Walk, good photo ops not to mention good eats also....just hope you get good weather.... Enjoy

Check out Fredricksburg, Johnson State Park, Natural Bridge Cave, maybe even Enchanted Rock, all in the Hill Country.

North of South Padre Island on the mainland side of the sound is a bird sanctuary. It's the first land that birds reach coming up from the south.

We really enjoyed the outlying old spanish missions. You can follow the "National Park Service mission trail. Great architecture and culture for photos.
The Alamo was a disappointing bust.
Big Bend National Park is absolutely one of my favorites. A long long drive.

Padre Island is not too hard to get to from Rockport. Also close to Corpus Christi. On the south of Corpus there is a road out to Padre. At the island end of the road there used to be a long pier out into the Gulf. If lucky you might get some giant sting ray pictures. Seem to remember the pier was called Bob Hall pier.

I think if you aren't a native Texan with an interest in the state's history, it's easy for much of what the Alamo represents to us to be lost on others. And that's ok, really. Still, the chapel building is interesting architecturally, especially at night when fewer people are around. The mission was established by the Franciscans in 1718. Turned out it was built on the wrong side of the river from where the town was located and had a hard time getting off the ground.
The Menger Hotel next door is an interesting and historic hotel which has been open continuously for about 160 years. Theodore Roosevelt recruited for the Rough Riders in its bar, and Carrie Nation attacked it with an axe.
