I cropped it even more than did Linda, keeping the wick on the thirds line but cropping some of the front bottom of the holder. Details of the candle and wood stand out in the resulting bold, still life.

Thanks for you input. Very valid suggestions and, I understand your reasoning. But the whole idea behind my shot was to use the table to lead the eye to the holder than beyond. When my wife saw it she said it reminder her of a steamship coming into port. The candles representing the stacks. That view certainly never occurred to me.

Here is a shot I was working on yesterday. I wanted to emphasize the texture of the wax and the grain in the wood. In addition to also emphasis the lighting of the candleholder. For those who would say to light the candles, I thought about that. But I decided that, at least for me it would take away from my final product. I am willing to guess there are more in the light the candles camp than not.

Lit vs.not lit?

I was, at first, surprised that they were unlit, but then I thought of the many unlit votives ... waiting for individuals...each with their own reason for lighting one...so many possible emotions... remembrances... imperatives behind their ultimate lightings...

Made me think perhaps more than I would have had they already been lit...???

Thanks Dave for stopping by and commenting. Glad I could get you to think. Don't want our brains to dry up and turn to stone.

I am trying to find everyday things to photograph and expand my brain while I still have the ability to think. But than again ask my wife she may not agree with the ability to think.

I think you achieved your stated goals wonderfully, Frank. Here is a crop for your consideration. I feel the amount of negative space in the frame is a drawback as it's more difficult to see the textures and excellent lighting.

At first I wished for more space at the top also but this crop looks balanced to me. The light and line of the table grain lead us at a nice angle to the subject. I'm on the fence about the one little wick that is visible. Kind of quirky and fun

Nice crop Linda. Really brings out the details in the wood. As for the wick, it certainly defines what we are seeing in the image...

I was surprised by the number of people who were ok with not lighting the candles
