Thanks Earl. Had to crank that ISO up to be able to use natural light.

Your butter is a Painted Lady, Bmac. Beautiful shot and especially nice to see this time of year.

Thanks Donna, I thought it was. She had me chase her all over the garden to get a picture. Guess she was camera shy.

...........There is a major flaw in the photo though. See if you can find why this image could not pass muster in a competition.

Have you given up Linda??

Okay, will explain as soon as Linda responds. She's good at critiquing, I have confidence in her.

Sorry, I gave up. I see nothing I would deduct points for should I ever be foolish enough to offer to judge any contest

You would be a very good judge, as your critique frequently rings true. Anyway, the major flaw in the image is that the painted lady's head and eyes are not in focus. They are simply not sharp enough to be a good macro. Wings came out decent though.

The insect is turned away from us and the eye is tiny. I can understand this being of concern to some judges, but wouldn't be for me - at least in a broader category. Perhaps macro has more stringent rules?

It's been interesting over the years on UHH to read people's experiences with the subjective feedback of critics. I've also read a couple of online essays by those who do contest judging. All quite enlightening and surely frustrating for contestants.

Thanks Bmac!

Thanks Bmac!

I tend to be my own worst critic. Sometimes culling thru photos I delete images which at one time I thought were good. Into the trash they go as I murmur....."they're only photos, they're only photos."

There's something a little funky going on with the wing closest to the flower (the part that contains a lot of white). Aggressive sharpening perhaps? The contrast of the flower with deep green background is striking.

It appears a bit tattered along most of trailing edge. Wear. You are seeing the edge of the left hind wing, top side, beyond.
