At least I think this is a painted lady butterfly. Correct me if I am wrong.

There's something a little funky going on with the wing closest to the flower (the part that contains a lot of white). Aggressive sharpening perhaps?
The contrast of the flower with deep green background is striking.

Have no idea of what the ID of the butterfly is, but that is one excellent capture.

Limited, on Chromebook but the area within the triangle. Maybe what I'm seeing is just the texture of the underwing itself. It seemed like it should have been smoother. But then I guess I haven't examined the undersides of butterflies very often

I think what you are talking about is indeed the texture of the scales themselves. There is a major flaw in the photo though. See if you can find why this image could not pass muster in a competition.
