The jet pictures were taken back in the day on the USS FDR CVA 42 and the P3s were taken probably in the 80s.

I still think that the F4 Phantom was one of the nicest looking fighters ever made. Thanks for the photos.

The F8 Crusader was faster, and better in a gunfight. They used the F8 as photo-birds right through the late 70's because they were so fast.
Oriskany, at her last deployments and end of the war and into 1976 only flew F8's and A7's.
I was onboard through August 76 when she was decommissioned (and my enlistment was up).
Good ol days..I like how age and time softens the memories.

Great shots that bring back good memories. I worked as an aerospace engineer for the Navy doing in-service engineering at the Alameda and North Island depots for 26 years. I had a few P-3 flights, including one from NAS Alameda to NAS Jacksonville. I also flew to and from the Kitty Hawk in a C-1; that was an adventure. I spent 3 days on the Kitty Hawk investigation an S-3 landing gear problem. Over half of my time was spent working on the S-3; a great airplane that was retired too soon. Regarding the best looking airplanes, I would go with the F-8 and RA-5, though I have a soft spot for the S-3.

Hey dv, that black and white of 501 is exquisite. What a great shot! Thanks for posting.

That was my Skipper Commander Ed Hofstra and he was quite a story. I have an 8x10 framed on my wall of that shot.
