The camera was set at 6000x4000, and a very mild crop obviously brought the size down a bit. I've never interpolated an image, so I'll have to learn how to do it. To Costco's credit they did refund what I paid for the 20x30. I had never had any problems with previous 20x30s they did for me, and it could be that there was a malfunction in their system that day; the system was down completely the day before. I haven't tried any more 20x30s, but several similar images I since had them do in 16x20 came out with the same high quality I had experienced through the years. I hope the photo center stays open. Thanks again for your advice.

You're welcome. Good luck!

I agree that your image should have printed without incident. I'd bet there was operator error...

I hope they don’t close the photo center in the Costco I use. They do about 95% of my printing. I’m very satisfied with the quality. I no longer use Walgreens except in rare necessity.

The new Costco here in Fairbanks, Alaska does not have a photo department. They do have a brochure for on-line ordering. Sam's Club here closed rather abruptly. Their photo department was awesome!

Are Costco's photo labs any good, though? Photo prints would be the ONLY reason I would join Costco -- how does their quality compare to those other places mentioned?

Costco has processed all the prints I've sold, from 8x10s to 20x30s. The key is in the quality of your post processing.

I am kind of envious of these responses. I am almost done getting my AAS in Professional Photography at our local community college. We routinely bring in prints for critique as part of our assignments. Around here it is said that The photo department puts the "green" in Walgreen's because the photos have a nasty green tint. There is one store about forty minutes away that doesn't have the green. One.
Our Costco has done proper work, but usually, they come out too dark even if we send them in using the proper Costco color profile they recommend. They just upgraded, but it doesn't help. Once I picked up a series of 25 4x6 prints that were all half brown.
There is one guy here who is an artist at printing. His work is beautiful. It costs even more than sending it out. If we want good printing, we send out to a lab or to expensive guy depending on what we need the prints for. I find that weird in a town of 600k people.

Just had this enlargement (20”x30”) done at my Costco in Dallas, $9.99 +tax...super fun, I change the print frequently whenever I have a new favorite! 😉

Prints being too dark is often the result of incorrect calibration/profiling on your post-processing computer. Generally the monitor is too bright.

Please forgive me if I am covering old ground for you.

I’ve encountered the same thing with prints being too dark. To correct, I’ve reduced the (transmitted light) brightness on my MacBook to around 6, then increased exposure in Lightroom. I also try to get histogram exposure balanced when adjusting exposure. Now, my prints from Costco are usually correct on exposure (with the reflected light on the print).

There are probably others on here who can explain that better.

Has anyone heard that Costco is closing photo departments in some locations?

This seems to be somewhat old news from a couple years ago. Yes, COSTCO consolidated some photo services in to fewer locations or created centralized online printing at some locations. But for some reason this only seemed to be in the Eastern US. Not in the West. In California for example services in-store have increased if anything! I have no idea why any of this happened. I asked at my local COSTCO and they said it was news to them that any Photo centers were eliminated, but perhaps consolidated as I said in some Eastern locations. Perhaps older earlier smaller stores?

Our Sparks NV Costco closed but we still have the Reno one at least for now.
