Has anyone heard that Costco is closing photo departments in some locations?

Welcome to the forum. In my locations they have upgraded their processors.
Not heard anything... Hope not!
They have in my town and they also filled ink cartridges there ,also in direct competition with Sam’s clubs ,also rumored that Sam’s would follow suit
Yep, we lost the one closest to work.
Still have one close to home.

Sam's club has great deals in their photo lab. I have used them for years. Their Epson printer will crank out 20 x 30 prints and the price is 1/3 what you would pay at a commercial lab. Unfortunately they are not adding these labs to any new clubs they open. I just hope the one locally will continue to operate -- I think Cosco is doing the same thing. If they close a lab, it most likely needs to be updated and since they are not doing new labs, they are just closing it rather than doing the upgrade. The labs don't make much money for the club, but like their bakery operations it is a good draw to get people into the club.

They are not competitive with internet processors such as Mixbook or AdoramaPix.

You are correct. The places you named are much more expensive: Mixbook 8x10 - 3.99, Sam's price 1.99, MB 11x14 - 7.99, Sam's 3.96, MB 16x20 17.99, Sam's 6.96, MB 20x30 - 22.99, Sam's 9.96. I'm sure Costco prices are similar to Sam's since they compete neck & neck with each other. You may want to check your prices again before sending your files to one of those on line places.
Are Costco's photo labs any good, though? Photo prints would be the ONLY reason I would join Costco -- how does their quality compare to those other places mentioned?

I believe they are! Never found the need to try anyplace else.
Do you have a friend that can send an image to them for you and pick it up their next trip?
I have not used Costco, but have used a local Walgreens for making prints and have had calendars printed there. They are cheap, fast, local to me. Costco doesn't do anything local to me and therefore takes a little longer. I recently had a larger print made at MPix (to be framed) per a UHHG recommendation. I was very pleased with the speed, quality and price. I have just ordered a print from Displate as well. I had never heard of them till my son said that he had a discount there for a print and wanted to us it to print something for me. We ordered a metal print which isn't printed on aluminum, but steel. This will be interesting.....
For my needs, Costco does a great job.
Our Costco has closed it’s photo department in the store. They did send me a notice that they were closing and thanked me for my business with a $50 credit toward purchasing photos from them online. I used that money to order a metal print from them and it was beautiful. Outstanding job. Not sure I would pay for a membership there just for their photos but I’m betting if you got one, you’d be buying more there than you think! They always have something there I “need”! BTW...Sam’s Club is having a sale on wood and metal prints through January.
