I agreed to speak on Lightroom (LR) to my photography club in February. Of course LR is so chalk-full of features that I could easily over-whelm my audience with an exhausting list. I though I would focus on the most useful workflow enhancements. Specifically: those lesser known, but useful, shortcut keys and features that you wish you knew about earlier.

So I'm asking UHH subscribers , what useful LR shortcut keys/features do you wish someone had told you about earlier?

Well, these are the ones I use most frequently:

I use shortcuts to display panels (F5, F6, F7, F8, Tab, Shift-Tab)

I use the shortcuts to change modules (E, G, D)

Full screen mode: F So I can check what my image looks like

In the Develop Module:

Most important shortcut: Toggle solo mode (Alt/Opt-click a panel) This allows only one panel to be open at a time, so you don't have to scroll down through open panels.

Show/hide toolbar: T So I can check the status of pins and overlay before beginning an edit session

I use the adjustment shortcuts constantly: W, R, Q, K, M, Shift-M

And the shortcuts that modify the adjustment tools: X (for R), A (for R, K), Shift-T (for Q, M, Shift-M), Alt/Opt to Erase, / to toggle A/B brushes

And shortcuts that modify viewing adjustment tools: H, O, Shift-O

And shortcuts that modify viewing: J, Z, Space, Ctrl/Cmd-+/-

I use a trackball or mouse wheel to change the size of brushes (rotate) and feather (Shift-rotate). When in brush mode, flow can be changed using numbers (1-10%, 0-100%).

I use the shortcuts to rate (0,1,2,3,4,5), label (6,7,8,9), flag (P,X,U). Shift or Caps Lock moves to next photo automatically. (Note: I really wish there was a shortcut for label None)

And to edit in Photoshop, Ctrl/Cmd-E

Well, these are the ones I use most frequently: br... (show quote)

NICELY SUMARIZED!!!

I'd also toss in

\ to show & hide the Filter bar
Cmd+Shift+E for export
B to add & remove a photo from the "quick collection" - love it for tossing images into a bag for someone looking over my shoulder picking images they want
Cmd+A to select All
Shift+F to toggle through the window/full screen modes

Note that \ for Filter bar is in grid or loupe (G, E) view, it is Before/After in develop (D) view, and other things in other views. But I don't use it that often, so I didn't list it.

I do use Cmd+A a lot, but that's really a generic OS function so I didn't list it.

Clicking to see what happens scares me in LR. I have clicked and have not been able to change it back to the original. This caused me to have to work around the mistake I wished that I had not clicked. How does one undo a wrong click in LR?? I even import differently from what I learned because "something" changed and I didn't know how to undo it. It just caused me to work around it but I can't get back to the original. I do NOT like to have to learn to override the wrong click.

The history panel shows every processing step. Click on a previous step, and every subsequent step is undone. The first step is usually import or copy; click on that step and everything you did is undone.

If you’re okay with book learning you may want to get the Scott Kelby Lightroom book and at a minimum work through the section on importing. With any luck it will get you more comfortable with the application.

Control Z will undo what you just did. Control Y will undo the undo, restoring whatever change you made. You can go back to any point in your editing using the history panel. Or you can click on RESET in the lower left of the screen to reset you photo back to to its original state.

This is a great question...there are a lot of features in LR and I think it’s wise of you to get others opinions about what would be most valuable to your club. In our previous LR presentations, I think I get the most out of seeing someone’s workflow for a few photos from start to finish. Just my opinion. My club is always searching for speakers and sometimes members have to just suck it up and present. You’ll be great.

Well, yes. I could just run down the list of the ones I found most useful, and I have a bunch. But I'm discovering new features all the time and I thought an exchange on UHH might be useful to some other members. You don't know what you don't know, and all of that.

The feature I like best is the brush tool.
