Took these about a month ago with my Nikon D7000. I rented a 70-200 f/2.8 lens for this, and I'm happy with most of the pictures. Sure is a nice lens, but out of my budget range. I bought an 80-200 f/2.8 (2-ring) off of eBay just before Christmas, and will be trying that out at a couple of games this weekend. You might be able to figure out that my grandson wears #6.

Nice pictures. I shoot a lot of hockey my self. A couple of questions for you. Why didn’t you shoot wide open? I notice that these are at 3.2 not 2.8 except for the first one. Also did you shoot any down at ice level through the glass?

Picture quality is very good. The first shot is your best, why because it's close up and you filled the frame. Try to get closer to the action if you can. Your showing a lot of ice. Which 70-200 2.8 did you rent?

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I was a little worried about image sharpness shooting wide open, so I stopped it down a little. Guess this weekend I'll try at 2.8 and see how it looks. I could definitely use the extra light. I had rented a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR II to take these pictures. As I said, I've since purchased a used Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 D AF ED and will be using that. It's the model with the separate zoom and focus rings. I'll try to get down to the glass level this weekend and see how it goes shooting through the glass. Prior to this season, I've mostly shot video of the games, and the higher vantage point (and being above the glass) was a help. I just bought the D7000 and gear this year to get some still shots; I used to be active in photography when I was in the Navy (years ago!), but kind of got away from it and my recent camera gear wasn't good enough for shooting any kind of action shots.

Excellent images, thanks for sharing. By the way, thanks for your service from a Navy vet!

If I can give you a tip about shooting through the glass. If the glass is dirty and has puck marks which is what you will find shooting at the ends and corners shoot from the bottom of the glass where it meets the dasher that is usually the cleanest part with the least puck marks. It also gives you a good angle to shoot players gives them that “larger than life” perspective. Bring something to either sit on or kneel on. I use a simple garden kneeling pad. Good luck and have fun.

From one squid to another; thanks! By the way, I've been going through some of the pictures I took from my time in the Navy, and I posted a few here... https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-569673-1.html

The grandson has games Friday and Saturday night, so will be trying out the new lens and following up on the suggestions I've received here. Thanks to everyone; I should be posting some more next week!

Wide open aperture reduces the DOF. @ f/2.8 and 75 feet away, the 200mm will get you less that 5 ft front to back. If closer, such as 50 feet, the DOF is less than 2.5 ft front to back.
