I try to make a distinction between those that are sentient and those that are not.

Along a stretch of the road into Phon Sutton, there are LOTS of saguaro, including two of my favorites. ......... One is totally gone, and the other is slowly dying. My heart just breaks for these magnificent plants. I know they're only plants. But these take hundreds of years to grow, and they are so magnificent.

When I was in Az (many moons ago) I bought a small book called "Hello There" by Ernest E. Snyder. On each page it had a photo of a saguaro and comments it could have made. I'm glad I still have this book (it's from 1979 I think). Your post reminded me of it. And, yes, they are a living thing & it's a shame to see them die.

I did a bunch of those. Remember those balloon stickies with sayings or you could print your own? I'd put them on pictures of saguaros. They were quite popular. I even did an entire book of them for some company up in Scottsdale! Yes, they are living, and ancient beings. And just like humans, each one is different and unique. And thanks!

This fire was small by normal standards - only 800 acres or so and was contained rather quickly. I have driven through here occasionally since then, checking on my favorite cacti and they seemed fine. My last check was in September. Christmas Day we drove through and they are gone. One is totally gone, and the other is slowly dying. My heart just breaks for these magnificent plants. I know they're only plants. Thanks, Gregory. I literally slammed on the brakes and sat in the road, staring.

"... only the earth and the mountains last forever."

This a a quote from White Antelope Way, Cheyenne chief. (He was singing this in his death song just prior to being killed at the Sand Creek Massacre.)
