AzPicLady,
I agree with you the mighty Saguaros are magnificent. Many were here when President Abraham Lincoln walked the earth. If only they could talk.
Despair not about the souls who have lost their battle in the fire. It is the cycle of life, unless some irresponsible human caused the fire. But not far from where they are is a saguaro forest with cacti as far as the eye can see. I frequently drive by them on SR87 on the way to Payson and am always in awe. Just drive Bush Highway to the Beeline Highway, SR87, turn right (North) and you are there. A little further up the highway there are very dense stands of saguaros. It is like Saguaro Heaven.

Truly a dirty shame about what happened to these magnificent cacti. I'm glad you were able to capture those "before" images.
Thanks, Tbell7D. And especially since the fire was human caused!

Thanks, Jim. I just about lost it when I saw them.

Kathy, I agree with ou 100%. Yes, they are only plants but they are some of the most regal cacti on the planet. Your photos are great, but sad.
Greg
Thanks, Greg. And when one realizes their age, it is so terribly sad.

Unfortunately, this fire was human caused. That adds to my anger and the sadness. These are off Bush Highway. The fire ran between the river and the highway. All along that stretch are beautiful saguaros. About the only places better is on a back road headed south that comes into the back side of the Catalinas and down by Sacaton. Thanks for looking in.

Along a stretch of the road into Phon Sutton, there are LOTS of saguaro, including two of my favorites. The Cactus Fire burned through here in April. This fire was small by normal standards - only 800 acres or so and was contained rather quickly. I have driven through here occasionally since then, checking on my favorite cacti and they seemed fine. My last check was in September. Christmas Day we drove through and they are gone. One is totally gone, and the other is slowly dying. My heart just breaks for these magnificent plants. I know they're only plants. But these take hundreds of years to grow, and they are so magnificent.

A very poignant post Kathy, it touches my heart. It is a well documented reminder of similar devastation here in N California to places I am connected to. I fear more...much more.

I'm sure you have much more loss there. I cannot imagine the devastation there.

Wonderful shots Kathy. Like you, I'm saddened to hear they've been destroyed by fire. Many of our deciduous trees come back after a fire. Maybe there's a glimmer of hope for these?

A fire. Human-caused wildfire.

I did wonder about Catcher's Mit. Obviously the huge one is totally gone. But I'm afraid there's no hope.
So sad Kathy. I love saguaros. Good shots.
