So I snapped an image and loaded it on my computer, then changed the name of the on-screen icon from "No Name to "Sony A6300." I then ejected the card, deleted the image and took another one. I then loaded it onto the computer, but when I inserted the SD card the title "No Name" showed up again. (Head scratch.) I'm beginning to suspect that the issue is in the camera's software or firmware, and only an update from Sony will change that. Seems lame that Sony would market a nice camera like this and give it the name "No Name." Go figure. Oh well. Even Gary Friedman didn't have an answer for this one.

Yes, sounds like a camera anomaly.
Did you format the card when you placed it in the camera? That may do it.

On a Mac it's easy to highlight, delete and rename the card. Have no idea what it takes for Wintel computers.

Olympus TG-5 using Mac's Disk Utility—none of the above works.

Can change the card name in the computer but it always reverts to NO NAME when it gets back into the camera.

In the scheme of all things photographic, this is not important, but still a challenge to be overcome.

So I sent an email off to Sony support to see what they would have to say about this. This morning I got an email back from them. (seemed like fairly prompt response). This is what they say, and it appears that we're stuck with "No Name.". Whoever developed the software for the camera didn't have much of an imagination, I guess.

"Hello Greg,

Thank you for contacting Sony DI and Alpha Email Response Team.

Based on the information you provided, you want to know if you can rename the NO NAME title of the SD card used in your A6300 camera.

With regard to your concern, please be informed that you can't change or rename that NO NAME title. It is a camera system generated title and it is how your MAC computer recognize it. Renaming or changing it may affect the Sony file structure on your SD card and there's a possibility that the SD card will not recognize by the camera.

When formatting, my Sony A6300 names my SD card "Untitled", not "No Name. I see no way that the A6300 can rename the card.
Personally, I do not advocate the methods below. I prefer having my cameras format their own cards and live with the name they assign. Anyway...

Method 1:
I can rename the camera-formatted card on my Mac. The A6300 accepts and does not change the card name. Unfortunately, you have to swap the card to do this. That is: Format in camera, change name in Mac, put card back in camera.

Method 2:
I was also successful using
1. Macintosh > Disk Utility > erase & format using ExFAT format & Master Boot Record. Give the card a simple name (e.g. A6300). If Disk Utility can't format, erase and format using a Mac format. Then, re-format as ExFAT & Master Boot Record again. Be sure Disk Utility indicates a good format. It may take a few attempts if a card is corrupted. Of course, there will be no Sony folders after Disk Utility finishes.
2. Insert the SD card into the A6300 and turn on camera. The display should say "Preparing Image Database. Please wait". The camera will create the required Sony folders. Done.

I think I'll just leave it as it is and not worry about it. I don't set up different file folders on the SD card, anyway, as I don't tend to record several different events on one card. I just thought that "No Name" was a bit unimaginative for a card name. At least, with a name like that there's no mistaking which camera that card belongs to.

Is there not a way to rename the card in the camera, especially when formatting it? I saw you say that in the EXIF data that it says "No name" or "unnamed", so maybe it would have to be changed in camera so the camera can save it to the EXIF data. That might be something to look into. Or do a serious search in Google (or whatever) and see if there is a way to do it yourself in the camera, but before you shoot pictures. (This is just a guess on my part, and I wish you success in this. Too bad for Sony if there is not a way to fix that, as i would bet that many of the software photo processing apps look at that as part of the processing system.)

Nope, can't do it, it seems. According to the Sony rep, it is what it is. They would have to have assigned a different name when they designed the camera's software at the time. So it appears that we're stuck with "No Name." So be it.
