Yep - and for something this simple, probably a better tool. Using that layering method allows me to practice more with PS and maybe get a little more elaborate with complex/finite edits.

Thank you for acknowledging that. The feathering of the radial filter is pretty good at masking many shapes. The adjustment brush feathers and has auto mask which take care of more complicated masks. Both have a lot of control but not the blending modes of PS layers. However, you can go very far with LR.
