This carving falls within the category of decorative miniature. The “decorative” part of the title is in reference to the bird’s habitat. The carving is required to be placed in or on a habitat. Oh, and the habitat must be made. Can’t use the real thing or store bought flowers, etc. There is no requirement to carve the bird attached to the habitat. Some do, however. My educated guess is that this bird was carved separately and mated to the habitat. It can be challenging to determine which method was used.

I know absolutely noting about wood carving but I have seen some of his other carvings. This one is exquisite as the awards he won show.

You mean they actually have to be sharpened before using them? No wonder I have so much trouble!

And when you think about the wood grain structure with its intricate planar curvatures, getting all the planes and curves of the feathers and all else demonstrates the skill of the carver. Fantastic job and well worth a prize.

Just a little brag here for a friend of mine. Ronnie Zint now retired was a cabinet builder and now does wood carvings. You can see more of his work on Facebook under his name if interested. Photographs don’t show the detail and real beauty of his work. How anybody has the patients let alone the talent to do this is mind boggling to me. He told me the Owl pictured took him about 400 hours to produce and it won “World Champion Wood Carving 2018”. First time ever won by a Texan. Also he won 2018 Texas Champion.

Awesome talent and patience. I've done some carving but I keep it simple but even simple takes some patience. I'll post some in near future

“How anybody has the patients....” means the carver has to be a doctor or veterinarian !!

The rest of us would have to have a great deal of patience!!!

Just saying!
