World Champion Wood Carving

Just a little brag here for a friend of mine. Ronnie Zint now retired was a cabinet builder and now does wood carvings. You can see more of his work on Facebook under his name if interested. Photographs don’t show the detail and real beauty of his work. How anybody has the patients let alone the talent to do this is mind boggling to me. He told me the Owl pictured took him about 400 hours to produce and it won “World Champion Wood Carving 2018”. First time ever won by a Texan. Also he won 2018 Texas Champion.

Fantastic carving and some of the carvers are unbelievable. I used to carve a little and attended a number or the exhibits and have hanging beside my computer a 2007 calendar opened to the month of December of a Canvasback Drake carving by Pat Godin, another great carver. The reason that I have 2007, hanging is that its days match up with the year 2018 and in a few days will rehang another oldie that will match up with 2019. Images on all the old decoy calenders were taken by photographer Ernie Sparks at the annual Ward Wildlife Championships in Maryland for many years, and this particular carving was awarded best in show for 2005 and also was accepted in the prestigious Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum's Birds in Art show and selected as one of the works to tour the country but sadly as interest waned after many years the calenders ceased being published, but I still have many years of the old ones so just match them up with the current year and use them again!

Amazing! You must select a perfect piece for something like that. You don't want to be surprised with a defect when you're halfway through.

A fabulous piece of artwork. This is one of the best pieces of woodcarvings that I have seen. Give my congratulations to your friend. It is well worth it.

World Champion Wood Carving br br Just a little b... (show quote)

I have been a volunteer docent for 14 yrs at the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art located in Salisbury, Md. The museum conducts the annual World Wildfowl Carving Championships the last weekend in April at the convention center in Ocean City, Md and has been doing so every year since 1971. The winners remain in the museum on display for one year after which they are returned to the owners. You are absolutely right that photography can’t capture the lifelike details (getting close, though). The feathers are wood, but they look like you could stroke them.
I have had visitors claim the feathers are real. Once I had a very senior visitor proclaim “that’s BS, those birds are stuffed”. My only comeback I could think of was “they may be stuffed but they are stuffed with wood”.

This carving falls within the category of decorative miniature. The “decorative” part of the title is in reference to the bird’s habitat. The carving is required to be placed in or on a habitat. Oh, and the habitat must be made. Can’t use the real thing or store bought flowers, etc. There is no requirement to carve the bird attached to the habitat. Some do, however. My educated guess is that this bird was carved separately and mated to the habitat. It can be challenging to determine which method was used.
