What 2 things do you think would make the greatest improvement?

Excellent points.
I guess as others say composition (Especially look at the background so a pole is not sticking out of a head cliche).

1. If the camera allows it, I have the grid superimposed in the viewfinder. That helps to keep things straight.

2. Of course you pay attention to your subject, but check the edges of the viewfinder and see there something that's easier to eliminate before you click the shutter.

Focus, where you want it.
Composition.
"Straight" horizon.
A sense of passion or humor.
Good or proper light for the situation.

Having a memory card and battery in the camera tops my list.

Follow Up:

Don't rely on the "Auto Focus" to know what it is you're shooting.. But in my case with worsening eye sight, I'll have to take my chances with auto focus and hope for the best.

Vertical lines (trees, buildings walls), or level horizon? I aim for the vertical (unless it's a wide angle lens).

Color balance, parallax correction.

I do use post-processing extensively, but am learning to use it more conservatively.

I agree with Ansel Adams ,Bob. If the picture is not interesting sharpness is not the most important thing.

To improve, learn the rules discussed and then find way to creatively break them.

I see my picture and explore the edges all, the rest is habit. I shot slides and they good or no good for over 50 years and still think that way I guess.
