Call me a spoilsport but these days I'd be wary of showing anything around a child's neck and perhaps more so of (maybe) a set of mains powered lights. Having thrown a dampener on it, I do like it.

Crop it to 8x10, to bring down the top edge. Boost the midtones. Use the white brim of the hat to set the white point.

You have a worthy family photograph here.

Let me please suggest you make sure to work from a copy of this photograph, to preserve the original. You may later wish to process it again.

I bet it looks better other than posted here. Maybe a little more exposure and contrast. you could spend all day playing with it and still not be satisfied. It's a nice picture.

Spoilsport!

I've seen battery-powered lights like that. Maybe having them around his neck is not the best choice, now that you mention it.

Related - I'd never wear one of those long scarves that are now popular. Remember Isadora Duncan?

I see my intended suggestion was already made by anotherview regarding the crop.

Crop the top background a little more, leaving the face nearer to the upper 1/3 of the frame.

If it were mine, I'd crop the top down to (and maybe including) the tip of the cap. Then I would increase the contrast a bit OR darken the blacks a tad.

My personal preference would be to leave well enough alone.

Here's just a fun modification... brighten up the lights, color up his cheeks from glow of lights, brightened up his eyes, and throw in a little Santa Claus in the background.

I don't know if you can make this any better with this gorgeous child.

I would crop it just above the green/blue bulbs and take some off the top.
