XQD cards are the future. The Z7 and Z6 a single XQD slot. The D500 works well with SD or XQD. I use both.
I have a D850 and no XQD reader. An in camera option that I used is to copy all XQD files to the SD card, then read the SD card in my computer. Maybe that will work for you.

I was concerned that the XQD format might not continue. I read in a photography magazine that Nikon has started to produce their own XQD cards. I don't know where to purchase them yet. I have a D500 and use both XQD and SD UHS-II cards.

I 100% agree grandpaw, while Im the same with my D500, I was trying to give another option for faster memory cards to go with if others don't want to make the jump to XQD cards yet. XQD cards are pricey but completely worth the money.
I agree with both of you. When I bought my D500 Lexar was still producing XQD cards and were cheaper than Sony

XQD card is only really necessary for 4K video.
If you use a UHS II SD card it is fast enough for full 10fps shooting of stills, as well as 1080p video. UHS I SD cards won't buffer fast enough for much 10fps shooting.
Does that hold true for the cameras that are closing in on 50mp images?

If you're OK with using your SD cards for now, you might want to wait until the CFExpress (XQD 2.0) comes out. They are supposed to be faster, cheaper, more available and upward compatible with a firmware mod (which hopefully Nikon will do for their XQD bodies). There's a good chance they'll be available in 2019 according to rumors. Even if the D500 doesn't get the firmware to handle CFExpress, it stands to reason that XQD cards will drop in price once CFExpress hits the shelves.
Definitely user two cards. Bite the bullet and buy the XQD, if for no other reason than you'll have a backup in case one card fails. I think the price of those cards will come down, and they will appear in more cameras.
Just bite the bullet and get the XQD card, that card is one of the reasons the D500 is so awesome in the first place. Without it, the D500 may as well be a D7500 without the flash.

Recently acquired a d500 and I love it. My question is; other than backup, am I losing anything by not using xqd card? I am not very 'tech savvy'. Never even heard of xqd card until I got this camera. Been using sd card only,as xqd's are quite pricey. Appreciate any help you more experienced and knowledgeable people can give.
Thanks, Len
My solution: purchase one XQD card and use as a back up incase the SD card fails. Just reformat when you off-load your images.
I beieve it has all been said, but I have the D500 and use both of the slots, one for th XQD and the other for the SD. As has been said, the speed of the XQD card makes bursts easier and takes advantage of the D500's speed. I use the XQD for the RAW files and the SD for the JPEGS. They are pricey.

This is one of those cases where you get what you pay for. Quality XQD cards are quite a bit faster than SD cards. Their write speeds are faster which is very important for my work - sports action. Their read speeds make transfer to Lightroom take much less time as well. I am hopeful that Lexar will get back into the game and that the price of these cards will return from their current sky high level. We shall see. Best of luck.

Unless you need to shoot 10 frames per second with high res RAW files, you don't need the fast write speed of the XQD cards.

Sony makes an XQD and SD USH-II card reader. It is not that expensive and there is NO good reason not to buy one.
