I agree #2 is the winner.
A geologists dream. A beautiful shot.
You did the right thing with the retouch.
I think both are great shots... is doesn't matter one way or the other...what kind of camera did you use? thanks for the photos.

What is a CPL?
A CPL is a circular polarizing filter. It produces a variety of effects and has a number of applications. Reflections on water are one application. If the reflected light is polarized one can see deeper into the water and reflections are diminished. I was merely curious; it is a fantastic photograph.
By the way, I have the same lens mounted as I type this. Great glass indeed.
Here's a quick search result for such applications.

Screwed up - looked at another photo, I used a Tokina ATX 116 11-16 @ 16mm and F2.8

Thanks Craig - No CPL was used. I have one for my other lens, but not for the Tokina lens used in this photo

Quite welcome. I bought out a camera store's filter inventory when they closed but there are no 77mm CPLs or I'd hook you up.
That's a darn good lens as well.
This one of my favorite places to go to and be alone.... I like thats its only a 2 1/2 hours from my home. Have you been to the top of the Sierra Buttes? the view is outstanding

Photo taken in the late afternoon at Sardine Lake in the Gold Lakes Basin Recreation Area near Sierra City California. My sister-in-law thinks the rock in the lower left corner of the photo is distracting. I pointed this out to another photographer and he liked it as is. I am including both versions and would appreciate any input.
Thanks

Add me to the sister-n-law's distracting list. Maybe leave it a similar color but tone it down.

The colored rock is distracting in that it immediately draws the eye to the lower left. When we scan pictures, the brain's pattern is right to left, top to bottom. The colored rock looks so out of place that if effects how the rest of the image is viewed.
I guess there must be something wrong with my brain. When I looked at the picture in either the thumbnail or the download, my eye was not drawn down to the colored rock in the lower left corner at all. To me. the colored rock was not distracting as others have mentioned also. I noticed the color of the rock, but it did not draw my vision away from what I had focused on... the center of the image.
Maybe I see things differently, as I am totally blind in my left eye, so I don't know. Personally, I think my eyesight has a bit to do with how I see a scene when I compose an image, as I seem to not see things the same way as others do when they critique photos or give advice on photos posted here. Not saying others are wrong by any means, its just how I see and compose due to my vision.
If someone has some advice that might help me due to my eyesight, by all means feel free to offer it.
