Card reader. Why would you want to do it slower and draining batteries all while being feathered to a computer.

The argument of the fingers getting dirty or door wear etc is no argument because you can also argue plugging a little adapter cord in and out multiple times would have the same wear.

People worry too much about stuff like this. Cameras are pretty well built and short of physical damage you will always have wear. If you get a new car do you stay in it so you do not wear out the door?

The fact is inserting/removing cards does wear both the fingers in the camera and the pads on the card. And the more often the card is removed or inserted the greater the danger that a finger will break or a that problem will happen, such as dirt, finger grease, etc getting on the pad and transferring to the contact fingers inside the camera, or damaging them. So it is wise to look for ways to reduce the number of insertions and removals of the memory cards.

If nothing else, forgetting to put the card back in the camera is a non issue if you don't remove the card.

I don't worry at all, I just use the darn things!

Which is recommended? Pulling card from camera and using card reader or direct from camera?

I always use a reader, that way I do not have to worry about the cable coming loose or the camera battery failure

Always use the cable. I have two different cards in my camera and at one time bought a card reader. I found the card reader and pulling the cards out if the camera a big pain in the a@@. So much easier to use the cable and the battery power trivial. Some say it a bit slower but I have never been in some monster hurry to download.

OMD m5 II. I pull it from the camera and plug it right into my MacBook Pro card slot. Never had a problem.

For me it's part of a common work flow. For a quick answer, pull the cards. Why should I spend more battery life downloading from the camera. Also, every camera so far, (I own several Pentax cameras but have also used CaNikon also), has been slower than directly from a card to computer.

First, (after an assignment), pull and set batteries for charging. Get a install second set of pre charged batteries. (I always rotate one or both of them.)

Directly after that I turn on my computer, pull my memory card(s), upload from card reader or card slot, reload memory cards into camera without erasing them until the next assignment, run a quick post ed and prep images, do something around the house, check batteries.

Normally batteries are ready after an hour or two. Store them for the next time.

Probably after a total two maybe three hours, I spend the rest of day with family.

I do it by both using a USB cable, and removing the SD card and inserting it in my Dell XPS9800 PC Tower. This thing has four slots for varying types of cards. What I use depends on my mood and which camera, USB 2, USB 3, and how many files there are to transfer.

SD Cards: 4GB to 64GB SanDisk
Cameras: Pentax K-3, K-5, K-20D, K-100D, Fuji X100T, Samsung ST150F, Kodak P712, and Samsung SmartPhone Galaxy Note 8.

I have always figured that if the camera maker went to the trouble to build in "output ports" I would use them although I have pulled cards. I don't think it really matters but they build them for some reason!

Yes, either/or option.

Logically - have 2 large capacity SDs. When you remove #1 put in #2 and change battery for a freshly charged one (if in same compartment) before shutting door. This will cut down on door opening times. Reverse card and batteries, repeating procedure next time.

Pull the card and use a reader because it is faster. You just have to remember to put the card back in the camera before your next shoot!!!

I like this idea, especially for the Sony!
