Which is recommended? Pulling card from camera and using card reader or direct from camera?
Wear on camera card cover, contacts?
Wear on output cover door, battery drain?

I have always pulled the card and read it via either an onboard reader or one connected via USB. One thing to remember if you choose this method is to never force anything. If properly oriented, the card and reader were meant to fit together. If you have to force anything, you may be forced to pay a repair bill.

Both schools of thought apply... but for me, pulling the card and using a card reader at USB 3.0 is much faster to transfer raw images of 25-35 Mb then using the slower camera USB 2.0 connection.

I will continue to pull my card and use a fast reader.

If you are worried about wear, each method will "wear" on something.
I pull the card and use the card reader. Less trouble than getting the cable out and connecting it.
Then, once the images have been backed up in two places (local and Carbonite), I delete them from the card.
Card now ready to go.

Having seen a number of mini and micro USB connectors fail at a small percentage of their rated life (which typically causes the replacement of the camera’s main board, which is quite expensive), I either download via WiFi (when I have plenty of time) or use a USB-3 card reader and pull the card (depending on the camera).

Wear & tear is minimal either way. I always pull the card and use reader to save both to the computer hard drive, then backup device. I then format in computer - checks card - then always format in camera if reinserting (or using another card since I tend to rotate).

Whichever one works for you. For me, I use a USB cable to transfer files from my camera to a 2 TB internal hard drive (not the C: or OS drive) used just for raw image files. This is the longest part of the process. I open LR and import from the raw drive, which is pretty quick.

With a large number of pics to download, the card reader is quite a bit faster than the cord.

Wi-Fi downloading avoids the wear and tear problems, but it's slower and unfortunately Olympus does not have a wi-fi program for the computer, it's mobile only. However Mauricio Jost wrote "a very simple application that helps transferring wirelessly the pictures from the camera to a Windows/Linux PC." Note: MacOS was added as well. You can access it at the link below, the 4rd post from the top:

DISCLAIMER: I have not tried it.

I usually just pull the card from the camera and plug it into the PC. If you are worried removing the card from the camera will cause excess wear and tear then you should either get a better camera because excess wear should only happen to a cheap camera, or find something else to worry about. The wear from removing and replacing the memory card should be inconsequential.

The fact is inserting/removing cards does wear both the fingers in the camera and the pads on the card. And the more often the card is removed or inserted the greater the danger that a finger will break or a that problem will happen, such as dirt, finger grease, etc getting on the pad and transferring to the contact fingers inside the camera, or damaging them. So it is wise to look for ways to reduce the number of insertions and removals of the memory cards.

If nothing else, forgetting to put the card back in the camera is a non issue if you don't remove the card.

I don't have to PULL the card from the camera, it ejects smoothly. I then insert directly into the computer slot, or the card reader. Formatting is done back in the camera.

Card reader. Micro USB ports on the camera can be fragile and costly to repair. The cost of door replacement is far cheaper, and often user replaceable.

Use a card reader, cable to camera can damage the camera if you pull on cable by mistake and that camera connector can wear out.
