For me, things like the built-in flash are what tip the scales. There is no substitute for the convenience of that flash when you need it. I don't pack a flash along whenever I take the camera "for a spin", and often the need for flash is spontaneous. I don't like the idea of fiddling with a flash when a photo opportunity comes along that requires some fill-flash to turn out just right. Just punch the button, up comes the flash, shoot, and punch it back down. That flash, the tilting screen, the reasonable price, comparative light-weight, time-proven reliability, etc. etc. are why I chose the D750 over all other choices this year. It being 4 years old has not diminished it's continued stance as one of the best deals out there for so many photographers. When the D750 is used by professional wedding and event photographers, you just know it measures up in sharpness, low-light auto-focus, dynamic range etc. to meet and exceed my less-critical needs. I'd still go with the D750.

One thing to consider is that the Z6, Z7, and D850 have the newer BSI (back side illuminated) sensors for improved image quality in low light.

Hello all,

I have decided that a Nikon 850 is too expensive for my budget and have settled onto purchasing either the Nikon D750 or the Nikon Z6. I am upgrading from 9 years with a D90 to a full-frame format. I have no interest in video and mostly want to obtain tack sharp landscape photos (camera+lens+technique).

My thoughts are as follows. Does the use of a lens adapter on the Z6 degrade image quality?

Built in flash on the D750 could be helpful for occasional indoor family pictures. Extra expense to add flash to Z6.

D750 doesn't have a built in image stabilization as does the Z6, which would limit the lens selection to those with VR on the D750. Lens selection would be the same quality with either camera.

Currently, the D750 comes with a battery pack that would probably allow for easier vertical shots.

D750 control layout is more traditional than on the Z6. Less of a learning curve with the D750.

D750 is a bit less expensive, but it is four years old. Z6 is brand new and is most likely to receive a great deal of Nikon's research attention and budget in the future.

I guess what I am asking is would today's UHH Nikon D750 users, if they were buying a camera today, still choose the D750 or would they buy a Z6?

Thanks for your help.

Well, I have a 750, and it will do everything I will ever need in a camera and I have no complaints at all with the 750. Unless You just want to spend all that extra money You have laying around I would suggest the 750, and possibly a couple extra lens with the money You saved. You will not be sorry. The capability of low light photography and higher iso is amazing.

Tough choice, but I love my D750. The Z6 is new, and it hasn't gotten 100% positive reviews - just like every other camera ever made. What you have to do is decide if you want to switch to mirrorless, learn a new system, and buy new lenses. There was a comparison between the D750 and Z6. I'll see if I can find it.

"hasn't gotten 100% positive reviews" Wow good luck with a 100% positive rating on anything.

I haven't tried setting A11 yet. I'll try that out in the same light conditions where the Z6 hunted for focus.

I'm trying to completely understand when the camera is using its mechanical shutter and when it's using its electronic shutter. The way I understand it is that the camera is using the mechanical shutter is setting d5 is disabled and is using electronic shutter is d5 is enabled. I know that the fastest shutter speed is 1/2000 second when electronic shutter is used. If a shutter speed of 1/2000 to 1/8000 second is needed, option d5 must be disabled. Do you have a Z6? Is that what is happening?

This setting is not the same as selecting silent shutter. It is specifically to avoid blurring from the front curtain of the mechanical shutter. My guess is that anything faster than 1/2000 is too fast to cause a blur.

Going to silent shooting allows higher shutter speeds but you lose some features.

I do have the Z6, but so far have been relying on the mechanical shutter, unless I accidentally pressed something.

I own a D750 and many lenses. I will be buying a z6 + adapter.

If you have existing F-mount full frame lenses that you love then either camera makes sense. If you do not have full frame F mount lenses then the z6 is the logical choice as you can buy the z-mount lenses going forward

Your right, the D750 is a little less expensive but your also getting a tried & true DSLR that's been in the public's hands for a while. I think I'll wait a few years to see how Nikon's new Z cameras hold up to public scrutiny.

The new lenses for the Z are better than anything else Nikon has to offer ! And, so it will be for the future !

If you truly value your first statement regarding landscape sharpness, the decision is clear - Z6 !

I've been using a D750 since it came out, frustrated at its interface/controls following my growth from the D1x through the D700. That said (written) the image quality is, indeed, outstanding. My lens collection ranges from 17-35 f2.8, 28-70 f2.8, 70-200 f2.8vr, 50 f1.8G, 105 f2.8 and f28-300 3.5-5.6.
But, still I hunger for better and lighter and faster. So, as a video shooter and photographer, the Z6 with 24-70 f4 and FTZ adapter are my next steps. I handled one at an NPS intro event and was very impressed with what it felt like and what the silent mode-delivered images looked like. I read the camerasreviewed.com piece and look forward to getting my own for portraits, landscapes, street photography and fine art. Of course, I will also need an xqd memory card and reader for the new format. But speed/performance specs look like they're worth it and then I'll want a newer, faster Mac to process and edit and a complete ink refill for my Epson 3800 printer.
This is what the "domino effect" really looks like.

Two things come to mind.

"Camera bodies come and go. Find a lens you like and keep it forever."

"You have a relationship with the camera body but you marry the lens."
