The Judge's shack is a former fishing shanty built around 1911. Sitting a few hundred feet from the Atlantic, it was purchased and remodeled by Judge Richard Hartshorne in 1942. The shack overlooks part of a 10-mile-long beach that is NJ''s last major stretch of undeveloped coastline. Unfortunately, Hurricane Sandy took out the primary dune that was in front of it, and it may not last much longer. Hope you enjoy!

Thanks so much for sharing Bill. I grew up in Seaside Park, and began fishing in front of the Judges shack, about 1957 long before the State, purchased the land from the Phipps estate. My neighbors had a fishing/hunting shack on Barnegat Bay. My first Beach Buggy was a 52 Willies with a striped Bass decal on the sides. Thanks for bringing back many fond memories, really appreciate it

Thanks Gregory - I appreciate your comments! Like many who grew up in NJ, I spent many summer days "down the shore" and my girlfriend (now wife) and I would often wind up in Seaside or Point Pleasant. Never had a beach buggy myself, but I still think of the white 68 Camaro we used to take down the GSP. There are some fund raising efforts being proposed now to save the Judge's shack, and I hope they're able to get them off the ground.

I hope they can save what is left. Bill. I have only seen it covered, for the most part in sand. There were many shacks on the beach. I would dig around them and find pits that were used to toss the garbage in and find old bottles and tins that I would sell at antique malls. Caught lots of stripers and blues in front of the Judges Shack. It was a lucky spot

We don’t get “down the shore” often, but Island Beach is where we go. I’ve seen that shake but had no knowledge about it. Thanks Bill.

Wow - you have some great memories. This was my first visit to Island Beach, and I will be going back.

Very nice image. Thank you for sharing your experience and the info on the history of the shack. I’ve been there many times, but I’ve never thought to take a photo of the shack. Next time I’m up there, I’ll be sure to get some shots before it washes out to sea.

Thanks Einreb92 - glad you liked it. I saw pictures of the Judge's Shack, and then started to look into it. Lot of interesting information and a Facebook page.
