The Judge's shack is a former fishing shanty built around 1911. Sitting a few hundred feet from the Atlantic, it was purchased and remodeled by Judge Richard Hartshorne in 1942. The shack overlooks part of a 10-mile-long beach that is NJ''s last major stretch of undeveloped coastline. Unfortunately, Hurricane Sandy took out the primary dune that was in front of it, and it may not last much longer. Hope you enjoy!

Very nicely done.

Very nice. There are not too many if any of those fishing shacks left in NJ. The Long Beach Island Shack disappeared with Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Thanks retiredsgt - I appreciate your comments! My son-in-law suggested I go to Island Beach, and this was my first visit. Since it's a fair distance away, I wanted to be sure to take my time with exposure and composition. Also, I lucked out with the weather and a pretty nice sky.

Thanks pnittoly - I appreciate your comments! The Judge who purchased the shack and renovated it for his family's weekend getaways was a sailor with a good knowledge of Nor'easters. He positioned it on an angle so that it wouldn't take the full brunt of any storms, and it's the only survivor remaining on the beach.

Thanks phv - I'm glad you liked it. The "Judges Shack" is pretty well known, and its history has been documented and featured on websites and in print many times.
