The 5d has better frame rate and AF speed/accuracy - better for moving subjects.

Here is what I know. I stopped into my go to camera shop the other day and played around with the Canon R system and I really liked it. The camera has a very solid feel and is obviously well engineered and has a very robust feel to it. The lenses are incredible and expensive as you would expect from high end lenses. The systems EF adapters are amazing with one that allows for slide in filters and being able to use your EF lenses is huge for me. The other thing that stood out was it's compact size compared to my 5D's - another plus. For a fist addition mirror-less camera, Canon did an outstanding job.

The 5DIV is a great camera but I'm waiting for the next gen R which is reported to be released sometime next year before I make a final decision. In the meantime I'm going to rent the EOS-R and play with it some more. Who knows - if the 5Div price drops enough I may pick one up.

Right now I see the EOS R still in it's infant stage. The 5DIV is certainly a better value for features. In a couple of generations, you might see the ML hit the mark.

As a satisfied 5DIV and 7DII shooter, I am also waiting for the Rs to mature a generation or two.

Assuming good L lenses, which would you choose for an all-around full-frame for landscapes, wildlife, travel and family shots?

Unless there is money burning a hole in your pocket and what you have is adequate (My 7D still does a wonderful job even as old as it is) I would wait to see what happens in the next couple of years. The writing is on the wall. EF is dead and we are in transition like it was from FD to EF took some time.
{f investing from here forward in a body I want the current RF as it is the future. No fear at all about my EF investment as ALL my EF/EF-S lenses will work just fine on the RF mount. So even purchasing an EF/EF-S lens now is no problem but an EF body is a dead man walking.

I received an EOS R with the 24-105 Lens as a birthday gift from my children. I also own a Mark IV which I've probably taken 30,000 to 40,000 photos with it. I have only taken a little over 1000 photos with the EOS R mostly of Grand Children but I did take a number of Holiday Lights Night photos at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. I'm more than satisfied with the quality. I have owned 7 or 8 Canon DSLRs starting with the 20d and went full frame with the Mark III and then the Mark IV.

If you owned previous Canon DSLRs you will have more of a learning curve with the EOS R vs. the Mark IV. I still would recommend the EOS R as that is where Canon it going to put most of their effort in future models. The picture quality is at least as good as the Mark IV. It uses a Digic 8 processor vs. a Digic 7 in the Mark IV. I found that I don't have to review my photos as what I see in the viewfinder is what I have in the camera. You can still use any Canon lense you have with equal results with one of the adapters. I even tried the Tamron 28-300 and it worked as good as on the Mark IV.

Yes, there will be newer and better models in the future perhaps as soon as next year. That has always been true. the 20d I started with was replaced with the 30d, 40d, 50d, 7d, 7d Mark II. The Mark III was replaced by the Mark IV. The 2019 car will be replaced with a 2020, etc.

I think you will like the EOS R.

Try f/2.8, 1/500th, and set the ISO to Auto to start with. I also use single-point auto-focus, Servo, and high speed continuous. I found that focus tracking gets confused with so many faces in close proximity. I shoot a lot of b-ball at the local college. When I had a 5DIV and 70-200 f/2.8 I found the combo a bit challenged. Lighting was the big issue. I shot between 1/500 and 1/1000 and the ISO would get quite high. Hard to get the "perfect" shots that I wanted. Go early and take some test shots of the teams doing their warm-up drills. A faster lens is a big help. I went from the 5DIV to an R with the RF 85 f/1.2 lens and got better results, although, the fixed focal length requires me to move around the court more. Attached is a shot I took during warm-up with my R. Shot at 1/1000, f/1.2, ISO 1000, 85mm. Now I am waiting for the sports season to start up again so that I can try my R5. The improved stabilization and tracking should be interesting.

It's all about whether you like the EVF or the Reflex viewfinder.
