Yes a good quality body is important but invest in the best lens you can afford

I would contend that the 1Dx MkII is the most versatile Canon body feature wise. But either camera is capable of fine results.

Canon's 5 series is their bread and butter camera for all purpose photography. The Mark IV is the most versatile of their bodies because of the features they combine, 4 K video, and motion tracking are the features I prefer. Keep in mind the 5 series is NOT the same as the 1 series, and it's prices reflect that. But, the 5 series has been around a long time and reflects Canon's better efforts. The R is the new kid on the block, new lenses also. It will need time to evolve. Mirrorless has a long road to travel before going head-to-head with what is tried and tested. If you want to experiment go with the "R" series and have fun, new lenses and all. Expect changes along the way. For plain ol meat and potato shooting stick with what you know. "Family shots"? Interesting concept!

In my mind the 5DIV is the todays technology the "R" cameras have a way to go till they put the SLR 5D technology and features in them.

Interesting. I have heard and seen a lot about the new Nikon mirrorless full frames but not much feedback from UHH users about Canon. Good information from an actual user!

I'm not so sure that Nikon and Canon need generations to "catch up" . It's not like they didn't take other camera maker's challenges and failures and complaints into consideration before they produced their product. And they have been in the camera making business for as long or longer than some.

I decided to go with the EOS R over the 5D MK IV and have no regrets at all. I use a 7D MK II for all my sports and wildlife shooting (Airshows / BIF) and absolutely love that camera. I was facing the same dilemma when choosing a FF camera. I'm not a professional photographer so the issues that everyone complained about such as Dual card slots and inferior video didn't matter so much to me. I can say that the EOS R is a fantastic camera. All my lens are "L" type and they adapt to the camera flawlessly. I love the fact that WYSIWYG. The evf and flip screen are extremely crisp and clear. The battery life is definitely better than canon advertises. I have shot 850+ images on one battery. I can go on and on about this camera but you have to decide if it will fit into what and how you intend to use it. I can so that if i had went with the 5D MK IV the learning curve would have been much easier as the 7D MK II & the 5D MK IV are almost identical as far as layout and functionality. It didn't take me very long to get comfortable shooting with the EOS R. I cant wait until the new lens are available. I understand they are outstanding as well. You cant go wrong either way. Good luck with you decision!

Assuming good L lenses, which would you choose for an all-around full-frame for landscapes, wildlife, travel and family shots?

A good friend of mine went from a Canon 7D II to a Canon 5D IV. She uses the same lens and likes her results. She is a wildlife photographer here in South Florida. She wins awards for her work and she say the 5D IV is the best camera she has ever used.

I would hold on both.
Wait for next wave of R cameras.
Then decide.
5DIV is still a bit better all around but in the next round of R could really be showing its age.
Nice thing with the R is that it uses ALL your EF/EF-S lenses and actually enhances their performance over the 5DIV.

I love my 5DM4, but if I were buying today I would buy the EOS R. This is based on a little time hands on and reading/watching a number of reviews of the R.

The Canon 5D Mark IV. The Canon R is a good camera but not as good as the Canon 5D Mark IV.

Generally both Nikon and Canon made strategic choices when introducing their FF mirrorless lines. Nikon seems to have focused their attention on in body issues, like IBIS. While Canon focused on lens/body operability and backward compatibility. Nikon's choice was probably based on their wish to gain market share with tech advancements while Canon was probably trying to hold market share by protecting their user base's investments in glass.

I have the 80D, 7d Mark II, and now the R. It is my first full frame and I am enjoying it, but still in the learning stage. Currently using the R adapter with a variety of lenses. Have an R lens on the way soon. So far am very pleased with the R, but like using the larger CF cards with the 7DMII, wish the R used them.

The 5d has better frame rate and AF speed/accuracy - better for moving subjects.

I assume you mean compared to the R. And that is why I would recommend the 5D for sports. I am unclear if the OP's "wildlife" is as active as Birds-in-Flight, where the 5D AF system would be vital or if the landscape and other needs are more important, in which case the WYSIWYG and the on image sensor focusing might be more important.

I have 6d and 5div, but I would go for the R, as the R line progresses you will have the R lens which are excellent. So when you upgrade to the next R you will have the matched lens.
