Many things he said is worthy of "shitstorm" if you don't agree with what he said and you think he is trying steer you wrong.
Tony's remark in question here was one sentence in a 50-minute tutorial for the Nikon D3300--an entry-level DSLR. This is hardly an example of gear snobbery. His explanations are clear, crisp, understandable, and he provides a real service to our community. By the way, the video is well over a year old. Does he rock the boat occasionally? Absolutely. And I like that about him, even when I disagree with him.
I have no problem with people engaging in disagreements on issues. It is a good thing that we are talking (and arguing) about whether "Perceptual Megapixels" is a thing and whether this is a useful and meaningful concept. And a number of folks in this thread have argued the pros and cons, and I really appreciate this.
But then there are those who condemn Tony without even knowing or caring what he is talking about. If they saw Tony walk on water they would accuse him of not being able to swim.
Here is a little collection from this thread--and I have seen it on other threads as well. This is what I don't get:
“I've said it before and I'll say it again if Tony Northrup told me what time of day it was, I'd pray I was wearing an accurate watch so I could check for myself.”
"ROFL! A 9 Mp lens. (He must have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night!)"
"Have never, ever, heard anything good about this guy. Have heard disparaging comments for at least a year. It's sad the internet provides a way for folks to do half-baked work and publish the results as gospel."
“Tony Northrup is good for only ONE think. And that is posting click-bait.”
“When I first read your post, I thought you said chick-bait. I was wondering what he does to get women to look at his videos. I think you're right about him though.”
“Not NO but HELL NO! He's wrong. The size of the photo depends on the settings in your camera.”

“I wouldn't rely on much of anything Tony N. espoused.”
“The Northrups and DxO - a perfect combination!”
