Still playing with focus stacking some coins I have. I have included the first of 13 images and the final stack for comparison. Notice the difference in the overall focus to fully realize what focus stacking can do for you.

I posted 3 other images yesterday but again my post did not make the daily digest of posts. Will have to watch the time when I post I guess. I have now found the black hole of posting twice this week. Anyone else experience this?

Dave, thank you for sharing these images. Stacking is one or the many things I have not tried and if I ever end up with a lot of time on my hands it is one that would be on the top of the list.

Great shot, but notice some white 'dandruff' that seems more prevalent in the stacked imaged. Perhaps the mirror has dust or scratches on it. Perhaps the focus stacking multiplied sensor dust.

Very nicely done experiment in using the technique of Focus Stacking.

Very nice. I would like to know how you got the stack though. Are you using a Helios Tube?

Wow....if I had that much money, I would sit up all night and watch it! <big grin>

Nice subject, composition and lighting.....EXCELLENT image.

'You did good!'

Problem with all that money is all the different countries I would have to go to in order to spend it. Thank you for stopping by and leaving such kind comments.

Did you use a focusing rail or did you do everything manually in another way? Curious. I know the Nikon D850 I have will do the exposure part in camera. Then there are various programs that will do the stacking.

I use a Cognisys focus rail. Was never good at getting the stacks manually. I have always used Pshop because I already subscribe to the Adobe package. Have been pleased with the results so far so see no need to buy another piece of software. Especially what I spent on the stacking kit to begin with!

Wouldn't using brighter light and more depth of field do the same thing?

No, I am using a 180mm macro lens for this and the depth of field is very shallow. I shot this stack at f8. Had I gone to a smaller aperture then I could have gotten more DoF but never enough to cover the stack from front to back. If you look at the first image of the stack I have supplied here you will see just how shallow the DoF is at f8. With my focusing rail I make each image with a step of 3mm from the previous (something I could never do manually BTW). This gives me plenty of overlap for the stacking program to work with and therefore give me smooth transitions in the final image. Also, with shiny things like the coins here, a brighter light just creates a nightmare with the specular highlights at the edges of the coins. It really creates a problem when focus stacking because the stacking software has a hard time and usually smears those areas. That makes the amount and placement of your lighting quite critical for the final image.

You are welcome Greg. It is one of my fun indoors projects for the winter. I also plan on doing some splash drop photography this winter. Can't let the camera get rusty, right?

That is one sharp eye you have there! Yes, I have a pet parrot and he likes to share his dandruff. LOL I am too lazy to clean the mirror between stacks once I get the coins placed just the way I want them.
